macOS 27 dictation: what Apple says its new on-device model changes

Apple's Apple Intelligence page lists improved accuracy in Dictation, from a powerful new on-device model that it says understands you better as you speak. Its fine print limits it to English, and on the Mac to models with M3 or later and at least 12GB of unified memory.

I make YapToText, a dictation app for the Mac, so I watch what Apple ships closely. Everything about Apple's feature here is from that one page, read on October 9, 2026. People search for it as Advanced Dictation, but Apple does not use that name there, and the page does not say whether it has shipped yet.

What Apple says, and what it does not

  • The claim. A new on-device model allows Dictation to understand you even better as you speak.
  • Language. Available in English.
  • Macs. Models with M3 or later and at least 12GB of unified memory.
  • iPhone and iPad. The footnote lists iPhone 17 Pro and later Pro models, iPhone Air, iPhone Duo, and iPad models with M4 or later and 12GB of memory.
  • Not stated. When it arrives, the name Advanced Dictation, a settings switch, or a word on accuracy figures.

If your Mac has an M1 or M2, or 8GB of memory, Apple's footnote leaves it out.

Which Macs that leaves out

By Apple's footnote, every M1 and M2 Mac misses the new model, and so does any M3 or later Mac with 8GB of unified memory. Dictation itself keeps working on those Macs, with the model they already have.

To check yours, open the Apple menu, choose About This Mac, and read the chip and memory lines.

If you dictate in another language

Apple names only English for the new model. Dictation in other languages carries on as before, and the Mac dictation languages page lists which languages Apple supports and which run on the device.

A dictation upgrade for older Macs

YapToText runs on any Apple silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later, M1 included, and it is free. Its speech model and cleanup model both run on the Mac, in 29 languages plus auto-detect.

  • Any Apple silicon Mac. It asks for Apple silicon and macOS 14 or later, M1 and M2 included.
  • Cleanup included. Auto mode tidies each dictation with a model on the Mac.
  • It sits beside Apple's. You can keep Apple's Dictation on and use YapToText's key when you want its cleanup.

The Apple Intelligence and dictation page covers what Apple Intelligence does with dictated text today.

The short version

  • New model. Apple says an on-device model improves Dictation accuracy.
  • Limits. English, and Macs with M3 or later and 12GB of memory.
  • Unclear. Apple's page does not give a date or the name Advanced Dictation.
  • Older Macs. YapToText brings on-device dictation and cleanup to any Apple silicon Mac.

When Apple publishes more, this page will follow. If I have missed an Apple page, open an issue on GitHub.
