Voice Control not working on a Mac: what to check, in order

When Voice Control on a Mac stops responding, it is usually asleep, in the wrong mode, listening to the wrong microphone, or still waiting for its first download. Say “Start listening” first, then “Dictation mode” if it ignores your words, and check the microphone in its settings.

I use dictation every day because my hands make typing difficult, and I make YapToText, a dictation app built to sit beside Voice Control. Every Apple step here is from Apple's Mac User Guide, read on October 9, 2026.

Steps

  1. Say Start listening.
  2. Say Dictation mode if it hears commands but will not type.
  3. Open System Settings, Accessibility, Voice Control, and check Microphone.
  4. Pause about half a second between commands.

It does not respond at all

  • It may be paused. Say “Start listening”. Apple's guide pairs it with “Stop listening”, which pauses Voice Control so nothing you say is taken as a command or as text.
  • Check that it is on. Apple menu, System Settings, Accessibility, Voice Control. Its icon appears in the menu bar, and changes once Voice Control is listening.
  • First use needs the internet. Apple says the first time you turn it on, the Mac downloads a file once. After that, Voice Control works without a connection.
  • Check the microphone. In Voice Control settings, Microphone picks the input. Automatic follows the device the Mac thinks you are most likely to use, which may not be the one you are speaking into.

It hears commands but will not type

  • Command mode. In Command mode, Voice Control only responds to commands, so nothing is typed. Say “Dictation mode” to go back to entering words.
  • Spelling mode. Spelling mode enters text character by character, which can look like it is not taking whole words.
  • Click into a text field. Dictation only lands in an editable text area.

Commands are misheard or ignored

  • Pause between commands. Apple's guide suggests about half a second between commands said in quick succession.
  • Check the language. Voice Control has its own Language setting for the commands you speak.
  • Check that the command is on. In the Commands list, standard commands can be switched off. Search for the one you are saying.
  • Add your words. Vocabulary adds custom words and phrases, though Apple notes it is not available for every Voice Control language.
  • Turn on Show hints. It displays suggested commands on screen, which helps confirm what Voice Control expects.

Why regular Dictation stopped working

Apple's guide says that when Voice Control is on, you dictate through Voice Control, and standard macOS Dictation is not available. So if the Dictation shortcut does nothing, check whether Voice Control is on.

If you only want to type by voice, without controlling the Mac, Apple points to Dictation instead. The Voice Control vs Dictation page explains the difference, and the Mac dictation troubleshooting page covers Dictation's own problems.

Using YapToText alongside Voice Control

YapToText is built to work beside Voice Control, not in place of it. Voice Control can click the Start Dictation button in YapToText's menu bar panel, which does the same job as its dictation key. I have not run a full test pass with Voice Control, so treat that as how it is designed, and tell me if it does not hold for you.

The accessibility page covers YapToText with VoiceOver, Voice Control and switches, and the Voice Control commands page lists the commands.

The short version

  • Not responding. Say Start listening, and check the microphone setting.
  • Not typing. Say Dictation mode, and click into a text field.
  • Misheard. Pause between commands, and check the language and the Commands list.
  • Dictation gone. Standard Dictation is off while Voice Control is on.

If a step here no longer matches your version of macOS, open an issue on GitHub. Every one gets read.
