VoiceInk keeps changing the language or model: a Mode is doing it, and here is how to find which
By Ryleigh Newman · Published
VoiceInk records through Modes, and each Mode saves its own transcription model, language, prompt and output behavior. When the language or model seems to change by itself, a different Mode became active: it matched the app or website you were in, you used its shortcut, or it is the default. Open Modes, find the one that matched, and change its language or its trigger.
I built YapToText, a dictation app for the Mac, so read what I say about VoiceInk with that in mind. Every fact about VoiceInk here comes from its own documentation at tryvoiceink.com, read on October 11, 2026.
This app is completely free. You don't have to make an account. There are no subscriptions, no difficult downloads, and nothing is locked. Made for Apple silicon Macs. Source on GitHub.
Why a Mode becomes active
- It matches the app in front.
- It matches the website in front.
- A trigger group matches the app.
- It is marked as the default. Used whenever nothing more specific matches.
- You pressed its shortcut.
- You said its trigger word at the beginning or end of a dictation.
If the default Mode has a different model or language from the one you expect, VoiceInk will feel as if it changes settings everywhere.
Fix the default Mode
- Open Modes.
- Select the Mode marked as default.
- Either change its transcription model and language, or make the Mode you want the default.
VoiceInk's docs note that Respond Modes cannot be the default.
Fix a Mode that matches too often
You can disable a Mode without deleting it, and reorder Modes so the ones that matter are easy to inspect. If two Modes look alike, open each and compare the transcription, AI enhancement, context and output sections. The VoiceInk modes page covers triggers in detail.
Language is set per Mode
- Where. Open the active Mode and check its transcription language.
- Fallbacks. Some models and providers handle language differently. An unavailable language can fall back to automatic detection or a supported default.
- A provider that ignores the choice. Try another transcription model from AI Models.
- Not the interface language. Settings, Interface, Language changes the app's own menus after a restart. It does not choose the language you dictate in.
What a spoken trigger word does not do
A word trigger switches the processing after transcription. It does not run the recording again through the triggered Mode's transcription model or language. So saying a trigger word for a Spanish Mode after speaking Spanish into an English Mode will not re-hear the audio as Spanish. Use the Mode's shortcut, or an app match, when the language itself has to change.
The same idea in YapToText
YapToText, the free Mac app I built, also lets each mode carry its own language, so the same surprise is possible there: a mode set to another language will dictate in it. The default is your Mac's system language, and Auto-detect is one of the choices. Each History entry records the mode and the language, so you can see afterward which one ran. Bilingual dictation on a Mac covers working in two languages.

The short version
- Cause. Another Mode became active.
- Usual suspect. The default Mode.
- Language. Set inside each Mode, not in Interface settings.
- Trigger words. Change the processing, not the language the audio is heard in.
- Too many matches. Disable the Mode without deleting it.
If VoiceInk changes how Modes match, open an issue on GitHub and I will update this page. Every one gets read.

Questions
Why does VoiceInk keep changing my language?
A Mode with a different language became active, by matching the app or website, by its shortcut, or as the default. Open Modes and check the language of the one that matched.
Why does VoiceInk switch models by itself?
Each Mode saves its own transcription model. When a different Mode is active, its model is used for that recording.
How do I set the dictation language in VoiceInk?
Open the Mode you dictate with and set its transcription language. Settings, Interface, Language only changes the app's menus.
Does a VoiceInk trigger word change the transcription language?
No. A spoken trigger switches the processing after transcription. The recording is not re-transcribed with the triggered Mode's model or language.
