A Vowen alternative for the Mac, and how close the two really are

Vowen and YapToText are close cousins: both transcribe on your own computer by default, and both give dictation away for free. Vowen adds Windows, 99 languages and a $49 one-time Pro for files, meeting notes and its Command Mode. YapToText is Mac only and free with nothing to unlock, and its text cleanup runs on the Mac too.

I make YapToText, so this is a rival's view. Everything about Vowen is from its llms.txt file, read on October 9, 2026, and I have not used Vowen.

Where Vowen is ahead

  • Windows. It runs on Windows 10 and 11 as well as the Mac.
  • Languages. 99 against 29, plus translation to English.
  • More models. Parakeet and Nemotron beside Whisper, and cloud models when you want them.
  • A toolbox. Voice shortcuts, meeting notes and a set of small utilities in the same app.

Where YapToText is ahead

  • Cleanup without a key. Vowen's Command Mode works through your own key for an outside AI provider. YapToText's cleanup and voice editing run on the Mac, with no key or account.
  • Everything free. File transcription has no limit to pay off.
  • From the Mac App Store. Both of its models come inside the download, and it is open source under the GPL.

If you want AI editing that never leaves the Mac, that is the line between the two.

Who should pick which

  • Pick Vowen. You use Windows too, dictate in a language outside YapToText's 29, or want meeting notes and voice shortcuts.
  • Pick YapToText. You are on an Apple silicon Mac and want dictation, cleanup and voice editing with nothing sent anywhere and nothing to buy.

The short version

  • Both local and free to dictate. Vowen and YapToText transcribe on your computer by default.
  • Vowen. Windows, 99 languages, more models, $49 Pro for files, meetings and Command Mode.
  • YapToText. Mac only, with cleanup on the Mac and nothing to unlock.
  • Not tested here. I have read Vowen's own description, not used it.

If Vowen's details change, open an issue on GitHub. Every one gets read.
