Apple Dictation on a Mac, reviewed: what it does well, where it stops, and who should move on

Apple Dictation is good enough for a text message, a search or a short note, and it costs nothing because it is part of macOS. It falls short for longer writing: it stops after 30 seconds without speech, it has no list for your own names and terms, and it does not tidy what you said. Whether your voice stays on the Mac depends on your Mac and your language, and Keyboard settings tell you which.

I built YapToText, a different dictation app, so weigh my view with that in mind. My hands make typing difficult and I dictate every day. Everything about Apple here comes from Apple's own guides and its privacy statement, read on October 3 and 10, 2026. I publish no accuracy numbers, for Apple or for my own app.

What it does well

  • It is already there. Turn it on in System Settings, Keyboard, under Dictation. Nothing to install and nothing to pay.
  • No length limit while you talk. Apple says you can dictate text of any length without a timeout.
  • Type and talk together. On an Apple silicon Mac you can keep typing while Dictation listens.
  • Punctuation. Commas, periods and question marks go in automatically in supported languages, and you can say the name of a punctuation mark or an emoji.
  • Your microphone. Keyboard settings let you pick which one it listens to.
  • Every Mac. It runs on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

Where it stops

From Apple's Mac User Guide, read October 3 and 10, 2026.

LimitWhat Apple's guides say
SilenceDictation stops automatically when no speech is detected for 30 seconds
CleanupThe guide and command list cover punctuation, formatting, capitals and symbols. Nothing removes filler words or rewrites a sentence
Your own wordsNo word list for Dictation. A custom vocabulary of up to 1,000 terms belongs to Voice Control, and with Voice Control on, standard Dictation is not available
Deleting by voiceThe Dictation command list has nothing that deletes
LanguagesNot available in every language or region, and features vary by language

The 30-second stop is the one that decides it for most people who write more than a paragraph: pause to think, and it is gone. The page on that limit covers the workarounds.

Whether it is private and safe

It depends, and your Mac tells you. Open System Settings, Keyboard, and read the text under Dictation. It says whether your audio and transcripts are processed on your device. If it does not say so, Apple's privacy statement says what you dictate is sent to and processed on its servers, and not stored unless you opt in to Improve Siri and Dictation.

Apple says request data is kept under a random identifier not tied to your Apple Account, is not used to build a marketing profile and is never sold. The Apple Dictation privacy page goes through the statement line by line.

Whether it works without internet

On an Apple silicon Mac, Apple's guide for macOS Sonoma says Dictation is processed on the device for supported languages, with no internet connection. On an Intel Mac, or in a language outside that list, what you say is sent to Apple, which needs a connection. Offline dictation on a Mac lists the options that never need one.

Whether it learns your voice

Not in the sense of a word list you can see and edit. Apple's privacy statement says a history of your Siri and Dictation interactions is stored on the device and may personalize Siri, and that your device may send contact names, app names and similar labels so it can recognize what you say. There is no place in Dictation to add a word it keeps getting wrong. Voice Control has one. Custom vocabulary on a Mac covers both.

Whether it uses AI

Dictation is speech recognition, which is a kind of machine learning. What is new is narrower: Apple's Apple Intelligence page lists improved accuracy in Dictation from a new on-device model in macOS 27, on Macs with M3 or later and at least 12 GB of memory, marked as available in English. Apple Intelligence's Writing Tools work on text after it is typed, not while you dictate. The Apple Intelligence and dictation page has the details.

When it gets words wrong

  • Names and jargon. With no word list, Dictation has no way to be taught them.
  • The language setting. It listens in the language chosen in Keyboard settings.
  • The microphone. A distant or wrong input hurts every dictation tool.
  • It stops mid-thought. That is the 30-second rule, not a fault.

Mac dictation not working and improving dictation accuracy on a Mac cover the fixes.

Patient or client information

Neither Apple's Dictation guide nor its Siri, Dictation and Privacy statement, as I read them, mentions HIPAA. What they do say is where the audio goes: on the device in some setups, to Apple's servers in others. Whether that fits your obligations is your organization's decision, not mine, and nothing here is legal advice. Medical dictation on a Mac describes the options without making compliance claims.

Who should move on, and to what

My reading of the limits above.

If youThen
Dictate a sentence or two at a timeStay with Apple Dictation
Pause while you thinkUse something with no silence timeout
Use names and terms it keeps missingUse something with a dictionary
Want filler words goneUse something with cleanup
Need to control the Mac by voiceVoice Control, which is also Apple's and free

YapToText is the free app I built for the middle three. It runs on an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later, keeps listening until you tap the key again, with a safety stop at 30 minutes, has dictionaries that prime the speech model, and cleans up on the Mac. It does not run on Intel Macs, which Apple Dictation does, and it does not control menus or the pointer, which Voice Control does. Apple Dictation vs Whisper and Voice Control vs Dictation compare the approaches, and the Dragon for Mac page covers what replaced Dragon.

The short version

  • Good for. Short bursts, on any Mac, for free.
  • Stops. After 30 seconds without speech.
  • Missing. A word list, cleanup, and a spoken delete.
  • Privacy. Read the text under Dictation in Keyboard settings.
  • Offline. On Apple silicon, for supported languages.

If Apple changes how Dictation works, open an issue on GitHub and I will update this page. Every one gets read.

Questions

Is Apple Dictation any good?

For short text, yes. It is free and built in. For longer writing its limits show: it stops after 30 seconds of silence, has no word list and does no cleanup.

Is Apple Dictation safe?

Apple says dictated audio is processed on the device in some setups and sent to its servers in others, and not stored unless you opt in. Keyboard settings say which applies to you.

Does Apple Dictation work without internet?

On an Apple silicon Mac, for supported languages, Apple's guide says it is processed on the device with no connection. Otherwise it needs one.

Does Apple Dictation learn your voice?

Apple says a history of interactions on the device may personalize Siri. Dictation has no word list you can edit. Voice Control has a custom vocabulary.

Why does Apple Dictation keep stopping?

Apple's guides say Dictation stops automatically when no speech is detected for 30 seconds. No setting changes that.

Is Apple Dictation HIPAA compliant?

Apple's Dictation guide and privacy statement, as I read them, do not mention HIPAA. Your organization decides whether it fits.
