A free Dictation Daddy alternative that keeps your voice on the Mac
By Ryleigh Newman · Published
YapToText is a free alternative to Dictation Daddy for Apple silicon Macs. Both type what you say into any app with one key. Dictation Daddy is a subscription, from $15 a month or $99 a year, that also runs on Windows, in Chrome and on Android. YapToText is free and Mac only, and both its speech model and its cleanup model run on the Mac.
I make YapToText, so I am a rival here. Everything about Dictation Daddy is from its own site and its llms.txt file, read on October 9, 2026, and I have not used it.
This app is completely free. You don't have to make an account. There are no subscriptions, no difficult downloads, and nothing is locked. Made for Apple silicon Macs. Source on GitHub.

Where Dictation Daddy is ahead
- Windows, Chrome and Android. If you switch between a Mac and a PC, or dictate in a browser on a work machine, it goes where YapToText does not.
- Templates. Its llms.txt lists templates for repeated text such as signatures and report headers.
- Built for Dragon users. Its home page is written for people leaving Dragon, with medical terms included.
- A team plan. Team billing at $18 a month or $149 a year.
Where YapToText is ahead
- Price. Free, with no tier, trial or yearly plan to weigh.
- On the Mac. The speech model and the cleanup model both run on your Mac, and the App Store build works with Wi-Fi off.
- No account. There is nothing to sign up for, and no analytics or tracking.
- Voice editing. Quick Edit rewrites selected text from a spoken instruction.
If you only dictate on a Mac, the question is whether you want to pay for reach you will not use.
Moving over
- Your words. Add your specialist terms to a YapToText dictionary, one at a time by voice or by typing them in.
- Your key. YapToText starts with Right Command, tap to start and stop, and you can remap it.
- Your habits. Auto mode punctuates and tidies each dictation, so you do not say comma out loud either.
