A free BetterDictation alternative, with the cleanup on your Mac as well

YapToText is a free BetterDictation alternative for Apple silicon Macs. Both apps run Whisper on the Mac, so your audio stays there. The difference is the cleanup: BetterDictation's Pro add-on sends your transcribed text to OpenAI to remove filler words and format it, while YapToText does that step with a model on your Mac, for free.

I built YapToText because my hands make typing difficult, so I am not a neutral judge of a rival. Every BetterDictation fact here is from betterdictation.com and its privacy policy, read on October 9, 2026, and I have not used BetterDictation myself.

Where the text goes

On the base plan, BetterDictation's privacy policy says no audio or transcription is sent to its servers. Pro changes that for the text.

  • BetterDictation Basic. Transcription is local. The app sends telemetry: application performance and crash reports.
  • BetterDictation Pro. Transcription is still local, but the text is sent to OpenAI's API for stammer correction and formatting, under OpenAI's terms. Its FAQ says Pro needs internet access.
  • YapToText. Both steps run on the Mac, and there is no account, analytics or crash SDK. The App Store build works with Wi-Fi off.

If the reason you chose a local app was privacy, the cleanup step is the one to look at.

What you keep if you switch

  • Your shortcut habit. YapToText's dictation key is Right Command, tap to start and stop or hold to talk. You can remap it.
  • Whisper accuracy. Both apps use Whisper, so plain transcription quality should be in the same family.
  • Any app. Both type into whatever app has your cursor.
  • Cleanup you can edit. YapToText's modes are plain-language instructions you can change, and Raw Transcription skips cleanup entirely.

BetterDictation vs superwhisper

People often compare these two. Going by each one's own pages on October 9, 2026, they differ mainly in how you pay.

  • BetterDictation. Paid once, from $39, with local Whisper and an optional $2 a month cloud cleanup.
  • superwhisper. A free plan with unlimited local Whisper dictation, and Pro at $8.49 a month or $249.99 once for cloud models, AI modes and more devices.
  • YapToText. Free, local for both steps, and Mac only.

The superwhisper explainer covers its plans in detail.

Where BetterDictation is the better pick

  • More languages. It lists more than 100, against YapToText's 29.
  • Windows, eventually. It says Windows is coming. YapToText is Mac only and has no plan I can promise.
  • A license for a team. Studio covers ten Macs with an account manager.
  • A 14-day refund. If you want to try a paid app risk free, it offers one.

If you want local dictation and local cleanup without paying, YapToText is the one to try first. The list of free dictation apps has other options.

The short version

  • The cleanup differs. BetterDictation Pro sends text to OpenAI. YapToText cleans up on the Mac.
  • Price. BetterDictation from $39 once plus $2 a month for Pro. YapToText is free.
  • Reach. BetterDictation has more languages and Windows coming.
