Voice to text in Discord on a Mac: dictate messages in any server or DM

To use voice to text in Discord on a Mac, click into the message box at the bottom of a channel or DM, press your Dictation shortcut or the Microphone key to start Apple Dictation, say your message, and send it. Discord's own voice messages are a different thing: its help center says they can be sent only from the mobile app, though you can listen to them on any device.

YapToText, the free app I built, types into Discord the same way Apple Dictation does, keeps your voice on your Mac, and can press Return for you when the words land. I built it because my hands make typing difficult, and a fast-moving server is no place to fall behind. This page covers dictating, emoji, sending by voice and what Discord's own voice features do. If something already broke, the fixes for words that do not land in Discord are further down.

Dictate a Discord message with Apple Dictation

Apple Dictation is built into macOS and free, and Apple says it works anywhere you can type. Discord's message box is a place you type, so it takes Dictation like any other text field. For a quick reply in Discord, the Dictation already on your Mac does the job.

Step 1: Turn Dictation on once

  • You: Choose Apple menu, System Settings, then click Keyboard in the sidebar. Go to Dictation, turn it on, and click Enable.
  • macOS: May ask whether to share audio recordings to improve Siri and Dictation. Not Now is a fine answer.
  • Check: Dictation stays on, and the Shortcut pop-up menu shows the keys you will press in Discord.

Step 2: Dictate into the message box

  • You: Open the server channel or DM and click into the message box at the bottom. Press the Microphone key if your keyboard has one, or your Dictation shortcut, and talk.
  • macOS: Highlights the cursor and makes it pulse, or plays a tone, when it is listening.
  • Check: Your words appear in the box as you speak. Press Esc, the Microphone key or the shortcut to stop.

Step 3: Read it, then send

  • You: Read the message. Words Dictation was unsure of are underlined in blue; click one to choose an alternative.
  • Discord: Sends the message when you press the key that sends in your Discord, the way you always do.
  • Check: The message is in the channel and says what you meant.

Two cautions for a chat box. Apple says the spoken "new line" works like pressing Return once, so if Return sends in your Discord, a spoken new line might send the message early. I have not tested it, so I dictate a two-part message as two messages. And Apple Dictation stops after 30 seconds without speech, which can end a long message while you think; the 30-second limit page explains why. The text below Dictation in Keyboard settings says whether your voice is processed on your Mac or sent to Siri servers.

Dictate a Discord message with YapToText

YapToText is the free Mac app I built for dictating into every app, and Discord is one of the chat apps it knows by name. Whisper runs on your Mac, so what you say to your server is heard on your Mac and nowhere else, and there is no account. It needs an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later, and it is free on the Mac App Store. Click the message box, tap, talk, tap, and the message is waiting in Discord.

Step 1: Click into the message box

  • You: Click into the message box of the channel, DM or group DM you want to post in.
  • YapToText: Nothing yet. It types into the app in front, never into its own window.
  • Check: The cursor is blinking in the message box, not in a search field.

Step 2: Tap Right Command and talk

  • You: Tap Right Command once and say the message the way you would say it in voice chat.
  • YapToText: Opens the floating panel, with your voice as a wave and your words as they form.
  • Check: The wave moves when you speak. If it stays flat, the app is not hearing your microphone yet.

Step 3: Tap it again

  • You: Tap Right Command again.
  • YapToText: Finishes the transcript on your Mac, pastes it into the message box and puts back whatever you had copied before.
  • Check: The message is in the box. Read it and send it, or let YapToText press Return for you.
YapToText's floating dictation panel on a Mac: a live waveform, the sentence being typed, and cancel, pause and stop buttons.
Figure 1. Your Discord message forms in the panel while you talk; tap again and it lands in the message box as text.

There is no silence timeout by default, so stopping to read the channel mid-sentence does not end the dictation. While it listens, Space pauses and Esc cancels, and a canceled dictation is still saved to History. If holding a key suits you better, like a walkie-talkie, set the dictation key to Hold to talk; the keys and shortcuts guide covers that and every other key.

Servers are full of names a speech model has never heard: usernames, game titles, in-jokes. Add the ones you say often to Dictionaries, and they shape what Whisper hears as well as what it types. The Dictionaries guide shows how. And if a dictation lands wrong, your next dictation can take it back:

Say: As your next dictation, within 30 seconds of the last one landing, before it is sent.

scratch that

What happens: YapToText removes the text it just typed instead of typing the phrase. "Replace" one word "with" another fixes a single word the same way. Only the exact whole phrase counts, and both need Insert text automatically, which is on by default.

Auto mode keeps Discord casual

Auto mode is on by default, and the app you are dictating into is one of its clues. Messages, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger and Teams lean toward a casual message, but the lean only breaks ties: the words you said decide first. A short or casual Discord message is typed exactly as you said it.

  • Quick replies. Six words or fewer, or a short message with casual words like gonna or lol, stays exactly as spoken. Nothing gets polished into something you would never post.
  • Longer messages. Ordinary sentences get a careful pass that fixes misheard words, punctuation and capitals, and keeps your wording, tone and slang. Blunt or profane words stay as you said them.
  • Your call. Press 6 while you talk for Message, a light cleanup that drops filler words and keeps the casual tone, or 2 for Raw Transcription, which uses no AI at all. With Auto on, the pick lasts for that one dictation.

To change how one message comes out, finish the dictation with an instruction:

Say: At the end of a dictation in Discord, while Auto mode is on.

make it casual

What happens: The phrase is not typed. Auto mode rewrites the message in a relaxed, casual tone. "Make it shorter" and "as a bullet list" work the same way.

An instruction makes Auto rewrite even a message it would otherwise have left alone. The lean goes by the app in front, so I would not count on it for Discord in a browser tab, where the app in front is the browser; short and casual messages stay as spoken there anyway, because the words come first. The Auto mode guide lists every instruction it follows.

YapToText's Modes page: Auto on top, then Raw Transcription, Clean Up, Note, Email, Message and Code Comment, numbered 2 to 7.
Figure 2. Raw Transcription is number 2 and Message is number 6, so one key while you talk decides how a single Discord message comes out.

Add emoji and punctuation by voice

Discord runs on emoji, and both tools can type them by name. Apple says that in some languages you can say an emoji's name followed by the word emoji. YapToText ships 158 emoji with spoken names, almost all ending in the word emoji, such as fire emoji, skull emoji, laughing emoji and thinking emoji, plus a few shorter ones like thumbs up. In YapToText, say insert before the emoji's name.

Say: Anywhere in a dictation, with Require the word insert before a command on, which is the default.

that clip was unreal insert fire emoji

What happens: The fire emoji lands where you said it. Without insert, the words are typed as words, so talking about a fire never turns into a symbol by accident.

  • Safe from cleanup. Emoji and snippets go in after any AI cleanup, so a rewrite cannot drop or move them.
  • Two-word marks. Say question mark or exclamation point at the end of a clause, with no insert.
  • One-word marks. Say insert comma, because a bare comma could be an ordinary word.
  • Your own words. Every emoji and mark can be renamed, switched off or given more phrases on the Commands page, so you can name them the way your server talks.

Whisper punctuates ordinary speech by itself, so most messages need none of this. The spoken punctuation and emoji guide lists every name YapToText knows.

Send it the moment it lands

After dictating into a chat box, one key press is left: the one that sends. YapToText can press it for you, per app, in Settings, Advanced, Text output, under After a dictation lands. Automatic sending saves a key press, not a mistake.

Step 1: Add Discord to the list

  • You: With Discord open, go to YapToText's Settings, Advanced, Text output. Under After a dictation lands, choose Add App, pick Discord, and choose Press Return, or Press Command Return if that is the key that sends in your Discord.
  • YapToText: Presses that key the moment your words land in Discord, and only in Discord.
  • Check: Dictate a test message somewhere it will not bother anyone. It should post without you touching the keyboard.

It presses the key without a second look, so anything Whisper misheard is posted too, and scratch that cannot take back a message that has already been sent. In a casual server, I would turn it on. In a channel where a wrong word would land badly, a moderator channel or a DM that matters, I would leave Discord off the list and press Return myself. That is caution, not something I measured.

For a whole setup built around not touching the keyboard, the guide to typing on a Mac without hands puts this together with the other hands-free settings.

Discord's voice messages and text to speech

Two Discord features come up when people search for voice to text, and neither one types your words for you. Discord's voice messages are audio, and its text to speech reads text aloud.

  • Voice messages. Discord's help center says voice messages can be sent only through the mobile app, in a DM, a group DM or a server with Voice Messages enabled, and that they can be listened to on any device where you use Discord. So on a Mac, you can play one, but you send one from your phone.
  • Text to speech. Discord's help center says that typing /tts before a sentence has it read out in text to speech, and that you can turn playback off in User Settings, Accessibility. That turns text into speech, the opposite direction from dictation.

Text has one big advantage in a busy channel: people can skim it, search it and quote it, without finding a quiet place to listen. For the other chat apps, the guides to dictating in Slack on a Mac and voice to text in Messages cover the same ground.

If the words do not land in Discord

Discord's message box takes typed text, so the fix depends on which tool is typing. Click into the message box first, because both tools type at the cursor. For Apple Dictation, climb this ladder, smallest step first:

  1. Click into the message box. Apple's first Dictation step is placing the insertion point where you want the text.
  2. Turn Dictation on. In System Settings, Keyboard, make sure Dictation is on, and press the shortcut shown in its Shortcut pop-up menu.
  3. Tap the Microphone key, do not hold it. Holding it calls Siri when Siri is on.
  4. Pick the microphone by name. Under Dictation, choose your microphone next to Microphone source instead of Automatic, then raise its input volume in System Settings, Sound, Input.
  5. Turn off Voice Control. When Voice Control is on, standard Dictation is not available, and you dictate through Voice Control instead.

The Mac dictation not working guide goes through each fix in detail.

If YapToText's words do not land, or send at the wrong time

Another ladder, smallest step first:

  1. If the words go to the clipboard. On YapToText's Home page, press Grant next to Accessibility and switch the app on in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Accessibility. Without it, every dictation is copied to the clipboard instead of typed.
  2. If nothing is typed at all. On the Dictation page, in the Delivery card, check Insert text automatically. It is on by default, and off, every dictation goes to the clipboard.
  3. If an emoji comes out as words. Put insert in front of its name, and check that Enable voice commands is on, on the Commands page.
  4. If Discord beeps. Intelligent Insert reads the text around your cursor with a few invisible keystrokes, and some apps answer one with the alert sound. In the Delivery card, choose Turn off in another app and pick Discord, or lower Alert volume in System Settings, Sound, which silences only alert beeps.
  5. If pasting misbehaves. In Settings, Advanced, choose Add App Override under Per-app method, pick Discord and keep Type character-by-character.
  6. If a message went out too soon. Remove Discord from After a dictation lands, and press Return yourself from then on.

Figure 3. The Delivery card on the Dictation page holds two of the fixes: Insert text automatically, and the list of apps where Intelligent Insert is off, where Discord can go if it beeps.

The Intelligent Insert guide and the troubleshooting guide go further.

What each one cannot do

  • Apple Dictation. It stops after 30 seconds of silence, it is not available while Voice Control is on, and whether your voice leaves the Mac depends on what Keyboard settings says.
  • YapToText. It types text. It does not send a Discord voice message, transcribe a voice channel, add a reaction or unsend a message once After a dictation lands has sent it. Its spoken commands are punctuation, emoji and snippets. Auto mode's cleanup needs a cleanup model, which the App Store build includes and the Homebrew build leaves for you to download. There is no iPhone version, and it needs an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later; nothing is claimed for Intel Macs.
  • Discord voice messages. Discord's help center says they are sent from the mobile app only, so they are not a way to post by voice from a Mac.

The short version

  • Built in. Click the message box and use Apple Dictation, with pauses under 30 seconds.
  • On device. Click the message box, tap Right Command, talk, tap again; Auto mode keeps Discord messages as spoken.
  • Emoji. Say insert fire emoji, or any of the 158 names, and the emoji lands in the message.
  • Hands off. Add Discord under After a dictation lands, and the message posts itself.

Click where the words go, say the message, and let one key do the rest. Other apps take dictation a little differently, and the guide to dictating into any app on a Mac goes app by app. If something here does not match what you see in Discord, open an issue on GitHub. Every one gets read.

Questions

How do I use voice to text in Discord on a Mac?

Click into the message box, press your Dictation shortcut or the Microphone key to start Apple Dictation, and say your message. With YapToText, tap Right Command, talk, and tap it again, and the words are typed into the box.

Can you send voice messages on Discord desktop?

Discord's help center says voice messages can be sent only from the mobile app, though you can listen to them on any device. To post by voice from a Mac, dictate the message as text instead.

Does Discord have speech to text?

Discord's /tts command does the opposite: it reads text aloud. To type a message by voice on a Mac, use Apple Dictation or a dictation app such as YapToText, which types into Discord's message box.

Can I add emoji by voice in Discord?

Yes. With YapToText, say insert before the emoji's name, such as insert fire emoji, while Require the word insert before a command is on, which is the default. Apple says that in some languages you can say an emoji's name followed by the word emoji.

Can a dictated Discord message send itself?

Yes, with YapToText. In Settings, Advanced, Text output, add Discord under After a dictation lands and choose Press Return, and the message is sent the moment your words land.
