A superwhisper review, written by the maker of a rival app

superwhisper suits you if you want to choose your own models, local or cloud, and to dictate on a Mac, a PC and a phone with one license. It suits you less if you want something free that formats your text, because AI formatting is a Pro feature.
I make YapToText, a competing dictation app for the Mac, and I have not used superwhisper day to day, so this is not a hands-on test. It weighs what superwhisper's own documentation and its App Store listing said on October 9, 2026. Where the docs are silent, so is this page.

What superwhisper does well, by its own docs
- Choice of models. Each mode pairs a voice model with an optional language model, and you pick local or cloud for each.
- A real free plan. Unlimited dictation with local Whisper models, with nothing leaving the device, per its plans page.
- One license, four platforms. Pro covers unlimited Macs and Windows PCs plus an iPhone and an Android phone.
- A lifetime option. Pro can be bought once for $249.99 instead of by subscription.
- A documented private setup. Its sensitive data page describes a fully local configuration where no audio or text leaves the machine.
Few dictation apps let you decide, mode by mode, whether your voice stays on the device.
What to check before you pay
- Formatting is Pro. The free plan allows up to two modes and no AI processing, so cleanup and rewriting need Pro.
- Offline formatting is narrow. The docs say formatting offline needs the local S1-mini model in the Message or Mail mode.
- Some local models are Pro. Every Whisper model is free, but Parakeet and Cohere Transcribe need Pro.
- Where you buy changes the price. The docs say the website is cheaper than the App Store or Google Play, and student discounts do not apply to App Store purchases.
- Language detection. Its troubleshooting page says automatic detection can turn speech into English, and suggests setting a fixed language per mode.
What its ratings say
On the US App Store, Apple's listing data showed the superwhisper iPhone app at 4.4 out of 5 from 839 ratings on October 9, 2026, at version 2.25.2, released that day. The listing asks for iOS 26 or later.
That rating is for the phone app only. I found no App Store rating for the Mac app to quote, so I have no rating for the version most people search for.
The price, worked out

Lifetime and yearly cost about the same over three years, so lifetime only pays off if you keep using it longer than that. The superwhisper discounts page covers the 40 percent student and nonprofit price.
Who I think it is for
- A good fit. People who want to tune models per task, use Windows or a phone as well, and do not mind paying for AI formatting.
- A poor fit. People who want formatting for free, or who would rather not choose between models at all.
How YapToText differs
YapToText makes the opposite trade. It has one key and no model choices to make, and its cleanup is free.
- Formatting included. Its cleanup model runs on the Mac at no cost, where superwhisper puts AI formatting in Pro.
- Local by design. Both models ship inside the App Store build, so nothing is downloaded or sent anywhere.
- Narrower. Mac only, Apple silicon with macOS 14 or later, Whisper models only, and 29 languages plus auto-detect.

If you want to choose local or cloud models per task and dictate on several platforms, its own docs make a strong case. If you mainly want free formatted dictation on a Mac, its free plan leaves formatting out.
