A TypeWhisper alternative that installs from the Mac App Store

YapToText is a free alternative to TypeWhisper that installs from the Mac App Store with both of its models inside and has no paid tier. TypeWhisper is open source under the same GPL-3.0 license, its core dictation is free too, and it does a good deal that I do not: it runs on Intel Macs, Windows and iOS, offers many speech engines from WhisperKit to Parakeet, can use cloud APIs if you set one up, and exports subtitles from files.

I built YapToText, so read what I say about TypeWhisper with that in mind. Everything about TypeWhisper here comes from its README on GitHub and its pricing page, read on October 6, 2026. I have not tested TypeWhisper hands-on, so nothing here ranks the two by accuracy or speed.

TypeWhisper is the bigger toolbox. YapToText is the one with nothing to set up and nothing to buy.

Where TypeWhisper is ahead

TypeWhisper's README lists a long way more than dictation. If you want to choose your speech engine, TypeWhisper gives you the choice and YapToText does not.

  • Engines. WhisperKit, Parakeet TDT v3 and Ultra, Apple SpeechAnalyzer, Granite Speech, Qwen3 ASR, Voxtral and Cohere Transcribe on the device, and Groq, OpenAI, Soniox and xAI in the cloud if you configure one.
  • Intel Macs. It ships as a universal binary. Its README recommends Apple silicon and 8 GB of memory at least.
  • Windows and iOS. Its site lists macOS, Windows and iOS, plus an Android beta as of October 9, 2026.
  • Subtitles. File transcription handles several files at once and exports SRT or WebVTT with timestamps.
  • Workflows. Reusable transformations that run by app or website, from a hotkey, or on selected text, with translation through Apple Translate.
  • Undo and recovery. Undo Last Dictation, Restore Raw Transcript, and a recovery store that keeps the last three dictations for up to 24 hours.
  • For tinkerers. A local HTTP API, a command line tool, a plugin system and desktop widgets.
  • Moving in. It imports vocabulary from Wispr Flow and Handy.

What is free in TypeWhisper and what is not

TypeWhisper's pricing page separates the free core from a paid license, and says the split runs on the honor system. Dictation in TypeWhisper is free. Syncing your dictionary and learning from corrections are the parts that cost money.

  • Free. The GPLv3 app: core dictation, local engines, workflows, history, snippets and the APIs, with no account required.
  • Commercial, Individual. From 5 euros a month, or a one-time lifetime price, for up to 3 devices. It unlocks Sync Dictionary and Snippets and Learn from Corrections, plus non-GPL terms and support.
  • Team and Enterprise. From 19 and 99 euros a month.
  • Pay what you want. The listed price is a floor, and TypeWhisper says it refunds within 14 days.
  • Also Premium, per the README. Meeting automation with your calendar, and iCloud sync of History between your Macs.
  • Supporter tiers. One-time thank-yous of 10, 25 or 50 euros that are not licenses.

YapToText has no license to buy and nothing held back. The pricing comparison lists what the other dictation apps charge.

Where YapToText is different

YapToText does less, on purpose. It is one download from the App Store with both models inside, and it never talks to a cloud.

  • No setup. Whisper Large v3 Turbo and the cleanup model are in the App Store download. There is no engine to choose and no API key field.
  • No cloud path. Speech recognition and cleanup both run on the Mac. There is no cloud provider to turn on by mistake.
  • Nothing paid. No Premium, no license key, no device limit. Tips are optional and unlock nothing.
  • Auto mode. It reads each dictation and picks a mode: a letter becomes an email, a short chat message stays as spoken.
  • What it lacks. Intel Macs, Windows, iOS, a choice of engines, subtitles, sync, an API and plugins. TypeWhisper has all of those.
The AI Models page in YapToText: Whisper Large v3 Turbo (Q5) and Phi-3.5 Mini Instruct marked Included, model library below.
Figure 1. YapToText's App Store download includes both models, so there is no engine to pick and no model to fetch before the first dictation.

YapToText is free on the Mac App Store, and its source is on GitHub.

TypeWhisper vs Wispr Flow, superwhisper and Handy

The searches around TypeWhisper compare it with the two best-known paid apps. Against both, TypeWhisper's difference is the same: the code is public and the core is free.

  • TypeWhisper vs Wispr Flow. Wispr Flow sends audio to the cloud, is free up to 2,000 words a week on desktop and $15 a month after that, and has Android and iOS apps. TypeWhisper can keep audio on the Mac with a local engine and has no word limit.
  • TypeWhisper vs superwhisper. superwhisper's local Whisper models are free on the Mac, and its Pro plan, $8.49 a month, adds its AI modes and cloud models. TypeWhisper's workflows are in its free core, and its paid license covers sync and correction learning.
  • TypeWhisper vs Handy. Both are open source and free. Handy is one shortcut and nothing else, under the MIT license. TypeWhisper adds workflows, history, files and plugins under GPL-3.0.

See the Wispr Flow, superwhisper and Handy alternative pages for each of those against YapToText.

The short version

  • Want engines, files with subtitles, Windows or Intel. Use TypeWhisper.
  • Want one install and no choices. Use YapToText, from the App Store.
  • Either way. Both are GPL-3.0, and both can run with nothing leaving the Mac.

Two open source apps, one built wide and one built narrow. If TypeWhisper has changed something this page says, tell me on GitHub and I will fix it.
