MacWhisper vs Apple Dictation: a file transcriber against the Mac's built-in typing by voice

These two overlap less than their names suggest. Apple Dictation types what you say, right now, into a text field. MacWhisper is first a tool for recordings: you give it an audio or video file and get a transcript, with subtitles if you want them. MacWhisper can also dictate, but only in the version from macwhisper.com. So the choice depends on whether your words are already recorded.

I built YapToText, a free dictation app for the Mac, so read this knowing I make a rival to MacWhisper's dictation. Each fact comes from the maker's own pages, on the dates in the table notes.

Recordings: MacWhisper, clearly

Apple Dictation cannot take a file. For a recorded interview, lecture or video, MacWhisper's free version transcribes it and exports text or subtitles, and Pro adds speakers, batches and meeting recording. The MacWhisper pricing page lists what is free and what is Pro, and the batch page covers many files at once.

Typing by voice: closer than you think

For live dictation Apple's tool is built in and needs nothing. MacWhisper's dictation uses Whisper, works system-wide, and gains AI prompts with Pro, but you must have the macwhisper.com version. The MacWhisper dictation page explains the setup and the App Store difference.

A third option

YapToText is a dictation app first, with file transcription as plain text. It is free, runs on the Mac, and includes cleanup without an API key. It has no subtitles or speaker labels, so for those MacWhisper is the better tool. The MacWhisper alternative page compares them in full.
