Whisper Flow is spelled Wispr Flow: what the app is, and what Whisper is
By Ryleigh Newman · Published
If you searched for Whisper Flow, you almost certainly mean Wispr Flow, a voice dictation app made by Wispr, at wisprflow.ai. The name is said like whisper and spelled without the h or the e. It types what you say into any app on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, its free plan is capped at 2,000 words a week on desktop, and Pro is $15 a month.
It is not the same thing as Whisper, the open speech recognition model from OpenAI, and other products use similar spellings, so check the address before you download or pay. I built YapToText, a different dictation app for the Mac, so read what I say about Wispr Flow with that in mind. Its facts here come from wisprflow.ai and its help center, read October 9 and 10, 2026.
This app is completely free. You don't have to make an account. There are no subscriptions, no difficult downloads, and nothing is locked. Made for Apple silicon Macs. Source on GitHub.

Which one you are looking for
Wispr Flow from wisprflow.ai, read October 9 and 10, 2026. The spellings Whisper Flow, WhisperFlow, Wisper Flow and Whisper Flow AI all get used for the dictation app.
| Name | What it is | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Wispr Flow | A voice dictation app with AI cleanup. Subscription, with a free plan. | wisprflow.ai |
| Whisper | An open speech recognition model from OpenAI. Not an app by itself: other apps are built on it. | OpenAI's model card and GitHub |
| WhisperFlo | A pool pump line. Nothing to do with dictation. | Pool equipment sellers |
What Wispr Flow does
- Dictation in any app. On a Mac you hold Fn and talk, and cleaned-up text lands where your cursor is. Fn and Space starts hands-free dictation.
- Cleanup. It adapts the style and formatting of what you said to the app you are in.
- Many languages. Its help center says more than 100.
- Meeting notes. Notetaker records meetings on Mac and Windows.
- Cloud transcription. Its privacy page says transcription always happens in the cloud, on every plan, so it needs an internet connection.
The Wispr Flow explainer goes through each part, and the how-to page covers setup.
What it costs
Free up to 2,000 words a week on a Mac or PC and 1,000 on a phone. Pro is $15 a month, or $144 a year, with no word limit. The free plan page explains what happens at the cap, and the pricing page has every plan.
Whisper, the model, is a different thing
Whisper is a speech recognition model that OpenAI released as open source. Anyone can build an app on it, and many Mac dictation apps do, which is why so many have whisper in the name: superwhisper, MacWhisper, and others. Wispr Flow is not named after it and does not run Whisper on your computer: its speech recognition happens on Wispr's servers.
If what you wanted was Whisper running on your own Mac, that is a different search. The Whisper for Mac page and the local Whisper guide cover the apps that do it. YapToText, mine, is one: it runs Whisper on the Mac, free, with no account.
This app is completely free. You don't have to make an account. There are no subscriptions, no difficult downloads, and nothing is locked. Made for Apple silicon Macs. Source on GitHub.
