Wispr Flow offline: why it needs a connection, and what runs on the Mac instead

Wispr Flow does not work offline. Its privacy page says transcription always happens in the cloud, and its help center describes it as a cloud service that processes dictated audio on Wispr's servers. There is no local model to switch to on any plan. If you need dictation with no connection, you need a different app.

Offline dictation is the reason I built YapToText, so I have an obvious side here. The facts about Wispr Flow below are from its privacy page and help center, read on October 9, 2026.

Steps

  1. Install YapToText from the Mac App Store.
  2. Allow Microphone and Accessibility.
  3. Turn Wi-Fi off, click into a note, and tap Right Command to dictate.

What Wispr says about it

  • The privacy page. It says transcription always happens in the cloud to provide the best speed and accuracy.
  • The security overview. It says Wispr Flow processes dictated audio in the cloud to turn speech into text.
  • The deployment. It says Wispr Flow is a cloud service, not an on-premise deployment, and that customer data is processed and stored in the United States.
  • The plans. No plan in the help center, from Free to Enterprise, lists an offline or on-device mode for dictation.
  • The one exception, for meetings. Notetaker can record a meeting that starts without a connection. It saves the audio on your device and transcribes it after the meeting. Dictation has nothing like it.

So the answer is the same on every plan: no connection, no dictation.

Settings that sound local, and what they control

A few of Flow's settings mention local storage. They decide where your history is kept, not where your voice is transcribed.

  • Local data storage. On Mac and Windows it offers Store, Auto-delete every 24hrs and Never store. It governs the transcript history on your device.
  • Dictation cloud storage. It decides whether transcripts, audio and history are also kept on Wispr's servers for your other devices.
  • Improve the model for everyone. It decides whether your content may be used to improve Wispr's models. It is on by default for Free and Pro.

With all three set the most private way, the audio still travels to Wispr's cloud to be transcribed. Wispr says it is deleted as soon as it is transcribed.

What you see without a connection

I have not run Wispr Flow with the network off, so I will not describe its messages from memory. Its help center has articles on slow or failed transcriptions, on VPNs and security tools blocking Flow, and on retrying a failed transcription, which is where Wispr sends you when the connection is the problem. The page on Wispr Flow not working goes through those fixes.

Dictation apps that run on the Mac

These apps can transcribe on the Mac itself. Each line is from the maker's own pages, read in October 2026.

  • YapToText. It is the app I make. It is free, and the App Store build ships its speech model and its cleanup model, so it dictates with Wi-Fi off from the first launch.
  • superwhisper. Its free plan allows unlimited dictation on local Whisper models. Cloud models are a Pro choice.
  • VoiceInk. It transcribes on the Mac by default, for a one-time price after a trial.
  • MacWhisper. It runs local models, and it is built more for files than for live typing.
  • Apple Dictation. On an Apple silicon Mac it handles supported languages on the device. Keyboard settings say when it uses Apple's servers.

The offline dictation guide shows how to check that an app really works with the network off, and the private dictation guide compares where each one sends your voice.

Moving to YapToText for offline work

YapToText keeps one key and words in any app, and it removes the server. It needs an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later.

  1. Install it from the Mac App Store. Both models arrive inside the app, so there is nothing to download afterward.
  2. Allow Microphone and Accessibility. The welcome screens ask for both.
  3. Turn Wi-Fi off and dictate. Click into a note, tap Right Command, say a sentence and tap again. The words land at your cursor with no connection.

It is a Mac app only, with 29 languages plus auto-detect, no meeting notes and no team features. The Wispr Flow alternative page covers the full switch, including moving your names into Dictionaries.

The short version

  • Wispr Flow offline. It does not work, on any plan, because transcription happens on Wispr's servers.
  • Local settings. They control stored history, not where the audio is transcribed.
  • Local apps. YapToText, superwhisper, VoiceInk, MacWhisper and Apple Dictation can all transcribe on the Mac.
  • The free one. YapToText is free and dictates with Wi-Fi off from the first launch.

If something here no longer matches Wispr Flow's site, open an issue on GitHub and I will fix it. Every one gets read.

Questions

Does Wispr Flow work offline?

No. Its privacy page says transcription always happens in the cloud, so it needs an internet connection to dictate, on every plan.

Does Wispr Flow have a local model?

No plan in its help center lists a local or on-device model as of October 9, 2026. Its Local data storage setting controls stored history, not transcription.

Is there a local alternative to Wispr Flow?

Yes. YapToText is free and runs its speech and cleanup models on an Apple silicon Mac. superwhisper, VoiceInk and MacWhisper can also transcribe locally.

Why does Wispr Flow need the internet?

Because your audio is sent to Wispr's servers to be transcribed. Wispr says that gives the best speed and accuracy.

Does YapToText work with Wi-Fi off?

Yes. The App Store build ships both models inside the app, so it dictates offline from the first launch. The Homebrew build downloads its speech model once first.
