superwhisper for meetings: record a call, label the speakers, and get notes
By Ryleigh Newman · Published
superwhisper can record a meeting, but it is a dictation app with meeting features, not a notetaker that joins your calls. You make a mode with Record from system audio and Identify Speakers turned on, start it by hand, and read the result in History. Meeting mode turns a dictation into minutes. Both switches need Pro.
I make YapToText, a different dictation app for the Mac, so read what I say about superwhisper with that in mind. Every fact about superwhisper here is from its own docs, read on October 10, 2026. The pages are Intro to Modes, Built-in Modes and Speaker-Separated Meetings.
This app is completely free. You don't have to make an account. There are no subscriptions, no difficult downloads, and nothing is locked. Made for Apple silicon Macs. Source on GitHub.

Two different jobs
From superwhisper's docs, read October 10, 2026.
| You want | Use | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Minutes from a dictation | Meeting mode | Attendees, action items, key discussion points and decisions |
| A transcript of the whole call, by speaker | A Voice to Text mode with Identify Speakers and Record from system audio | A speaker-separated transcript in History's Segments tab |
| AI analysis of that transcript | A Custom mode, as a second step | Summaries or action items by speaker |
Record a live call with speaker labels
- In Settings, Modes, create a new Voice to Text mode.
- In its advanced settings, turn on Identify Speakers.
- Turn on Record from system audio, so the mode hears the other people through your speakers.
- Select the mode and start recording when the call begins.
- Finish with the Stop button or your recording shortcut. Esc cancels and discards the recording.
- Open History, select the Segments tab, rename the speakers if you want, and click Copy to Clipboard.
While system audio is recording, the waveform in the recording window does not move. The docs say to check History to confirm it captured. They also say every voice model supports speaker separation, and that the Nova cloud models are the most reliable at it.
Transcribe a recording you already have
- Record the meeting with any app.
- Select your speaker separation mode.
- Click the superwhisper menu bar icon and choose Transcribe File.
- Pick the audio file.
File transcription is a Pro feature.
The limit to know about
A speaker-separated transcript is not sent through AI in the same mode. Speaker labels appear only in History's Segments view, and Meeting mode's summaries and action items do not include them. For notes that say who said what, the docs describe a second step: paste the transcript into a text editor, switch to a Custom mode with Application Context on, and dictate a request such as Extract action items and assign them to each speaker. The docs call this an advanced workflow.
What it does not do
- Join or detect calls. The docs pages on meetings describe no bot and no calendar connection. You start the recording.
- Work on the free plan. Record from system audio and Identify Speakers are both Pro.
- Ask for consent. That part is yours. Tell people you are recording, every time.
The superwhisper privacy page covers where the audio goes with a cloud model such as Nova.
Other ways to get meeting notes on a Mac
YapToText is not a meeting recorder either, and it does less here than superwhisper: no system audio, no speaker labels. What it does, free: transcribe a recording you already have, on the Mac, to plain text.
- A recorded Zoom call. The guide to transcribing a Zoom recording shows the free, local route.
- Another app's recorder. MacWhisper's meeting recording detects calls, and Wispr Flow's Notetaker records to the cloud.
- A dedicated notes app. The Granola page covers one.
This app is completely free. You don't have to make an account. There are no subscriptions, no difficult downloads, and nothing is locked. Made for Apple silicon Macs. Source on GitHub.
The short version
- Minutes. Meeting mode.
- Whole call. A Voice to Text mode with system audio and Identify Speakers.
- Where. History, Segments tab.
- Limit. Speaker labels do not flow into AI summaries without a second step.
- Plan. Pro.
If superwhisper's meeting features change, open an issue on GitHub and I will update this page. Every one gets read.

Questions
Can superwhisper record meetings?
Yes, with Pro. A mode with Record from system audio turned on captures the call, and Identify Speakers labels who spoke.
Does superwhisper work with Zoom or Google Meet?
It records whatever plays through your Mac with Record from system audio, so it is not tied to one meeting app. It does not join the call.
What does superwhisper Meeting mode do?
It structures a dictation into meeting minutes: attendees, action items, key discussion points and decisions.
Does superwhisper identify speakers?
Yes, with Identify Speakers, a Pro setting. Labels appear in the Segments tab of History.
Is superwhisper meeting recording free?
No. Its docs mark Record from system audio and Identify Speakers as Pro.
