superwhisper history: where recordings are stored, and how to delete them

superwhisper saves every dictation as you speak: the audio, the transcription and the AI result. On a Mac the files are in the recordings folder inside ~/superwhisper, and by default they are kept forever. You can delete them by hand in History or in Finder, or set Keep recordings for to a period from 1 day to 1 year.

I make YapToText, a different dictation app for the Mac, so read what I say about superwhisper with that in mind. Every fact about superwhisper here is from its own docs, read on October 10, 2026. The pages are History and Advanced settings.

Where the recordings are

From superwhisper's docs page History, read October 10, 2026. A custom app folder location changes the Mac path.

PlatformLocation
macOS~/superwhisper/recordings. Older installs use ~/Documents/superwhisper/recordings
WindowsThe recordings folder inside %LOCALAPPDATA%\com.superwhisper.app
iPhoneInside the app. Open History there

The fastest way there: select a dictation in History and click the folder icon, which reveals it in Finder.

Open History

  • Settings. The History tab.
  • Menu bar. The menu bar icon, then History.
  • Recording window. Right-click the mini recording window.

The search field in the sidebar filters past dictations. The docs note it searches the original dictation only, not the AI-processed result.

Run an old dictation again

  1. Open the dictation in History.
  2. Click the reprocess icon below the recording.
  3. Pick the mode to process it with.

This retries a failed transcription, or sends an old recording through a different mode, without recording again.

Delete recordings

  • In History. Select recordings, holding Shift for several, right-click, and choose Delete.
  • In Finder. Open the recordings folder from a dictation's folder icon and delete the files there.
  • On a schedule. Settings, Configuration, Keep recordings for. Choose Forever, 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 6 months or 1 year.

The default is Forever, so nothing is deleted until you change it. If you pick a shorter period, superwhisper warns you before it deletes existing recordings. On an Enterprise license an organization can lock this setting.

Move it or back it up

The ~/superwhisper folder holds your history, custom modes, vocabulary and text replacements. In Settings, Advanced settings, App folder location, Change folder stores it somewhere else. The docs say to keep it locally accessible, because superwhisper uses it during dictation. Filesync syncs configuration between your installs, and does not include recordings or transcripts.

Uninstalling the app leaves this folder in place. The uninstall guide covers removing it, and the privacy page covers what leaves the device.

Stats, and the command line

superwhisper tracks words dictated and average words per minute. On a Mac they are on the Home tab in settings. Its command line tool prints the same numbers and can search and export the whole history. The superwhisper CLI page lists every command.

How YapToText keeps history

superwhisper from its docs, read October 10, 2026. YapToText from its own settings.

Both keep history on the Mac only. The history help page covers mine, and the guide to recovering a lost dictation shows how history saves you after a failed paste.

  • Kept. Forever, until you set Keep recordings for.
  • Delete. In History, in Finder, or on a schedule.
  • Redo. Reprocess any recording with another mode.
  • Sync. Filesync does not include recordings.

If superwhisper moves the folder or changes these settings, open an issue on GitHub and I will update this page. Every one gets read.
