superwhisper is not pasting text: what causes it and how to fix each case
By Ryleigh Newman · Published
When superwhisper does not paste, the transcription itself is fine: it is in History, and usually on your clipboard. The most common cause on a Mac is the Accessibility permission. Open System Settings, Privacy & Security, Accessibility, and enable superwhisper. The other causes are losing focus on the text field while it processes, and apps that block pasting.
I built YapToText, a different dictation app for the Mac, so read what I say about superwhisper with that in mind. Every fact about superwhisper here comes from its own docs, read on October 10, 2026.
This app is completely free. You don't have to make an account. There are no subscriptions, no difficult downloads, and nothing is locked. Made for Apple silicon Macs. Source on GitHub.

Match what happened to a fix
From superwhisper's docs page Text not pasting, pasting twice, or pasting old text, read October 10, 2026. It covers superwhisper on macOS.
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing pastes, text is only in History | Accessibility permission is off | System Settings, Privacy & Security, Accessibility, enable superwhisper |
| Nothing pastes after you clicked elsewhere | The text field lost focus while it processed | The text is on your clipboard. Paste it with Command V |
| Nothing pastes in one app | The app blocks synthetic pasting: secure fields, some terminals, virtual machines | Turn on Simulate keypresses in advanced settings |
| Old clipboard text pastes instead | Clipboard content is set to Keep what I have copied, and the app read the clipboard late | Set Clipboard content to Replace with dictation |
| Text pastes twice | Simulate keypresses is on in an app that also accepts the paste, or the shortcut was pressed twice | Turn Simulate keypresses off for that app. Check History |
| Messages send themselves | Hold shift to auto-send after paste is on | Turn it off in advanced settings |
Get your text back first
Nothing is lost. Open History in superwhisper and the dictation is there, with its recording. In most of the cases above the text is also still on your clipboard, so Command V in the right field finishes the job while you fix the cause.
The Accessibility permission
- Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Accessibility.
- Find superwhisper in the list and switch it on.
- Dictate a short phrase into a text field to check.
superwhisper's docs call this the most common cause: the app needs the permission to paste into other apps.
Apps that refuse the paste
Secure fields, some terminals and virtual machines block pasting that comes from another app. superwhisper's answer is Simulate keypresses, in advanced settings, which types the result key by key instead. Its docs call the feature experimental and say it supports only the standard US QWERTY keyboard layout. It is not available on Windows yet. Turn it off again for apps that paste normally, or you can get the text twice.
When old clipboard text shows up
By default superwhisper puts your earlier clipboard back after it pastes. That setting is Clipboard content, Keep what I have copied, under Text input in advanced settings. An app that reads the clipboard a moment late picks up the restored content instead of the dictation. Switching to Replace with dictation fixes it, at the cost of losing what you had copied before.
How YapToText delivers text
YapToText, my free Mac app, has the same dependence on one permission: it needs Accessibility to insert text into other apps, and without it your dictation is copied to the clipboard instead, so it is never lost either. If text lands in the wrong place, Insert last in its menu bar panel types the last dictation into the app you were just using. Every dictation is also in History, with its recording, the raw transcript and the cleaned one.
It is free on the Mac App Store, with cleanup running on the Mac. The broader superwhisper troubleshooting page covers shortcuts, crashes and slow dictations, and the alternative page compares the two apps.

The short version
- First. Your text is in History, and usually on the clipboard.
- Most common. Enable superwhisper under Accessibility in System Settings.
- One stubborn app. Simulate keypresses, US QWERTY only.
- Old text pasted. Clipboard content, Replace with dictation.
- Pasted twice. Turn Simulate keypresses off for that app.
If superwhisper changes these settings, open an issue on GitHub and I will update this page. Every one gets read.

Questions
Why is superwhisper not pasting text?
Most often the Accessibility permission is off. Enable superwhisper in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Accessibility. Your text is still in History.
Where did my superwhisper dictation go?
It is in History inside superwhisper, with its recording, and usually on your clipboard too.
Why does superwhisper paste old clipboard text?
It restores your earlier clipboard after pasting, and some apps read the clipboard late. Set Clipboard content to Replace with dictation.
Why does superwhisper paste twice?
Usually Simulate keypresses is on in an app that also accepts the normal paste, or the shortcut was pressed twice while processing.
Does superwhisper paste into terminals?
Some terminals block synthetic pasting. Simulate keypresses types the text key by key instead, on a US QWERTY layout.
