Wispr Flow not pasting text: recover the words first, then fix the cause

When Wispr Flow transcribes but nothing lands in the text field, the words are not lost. On a Mac, click into the field and press Control-Command-V, which is Paste last transcript. On Windows it is Alt-Shift-Z. After that, the usual cause on a Mac is the Accessibility permission, which Flow needs to insert text.

I built YapToText, a different dictation app for the Mac, so read what I say about Wispr Flow with that in mind. Every fact about Wispr Flow here comes from its own help center, read on October 10, 2026. The article is Fix text not pasting after dictation.

Get the text back

Default shortcuts, from Wispr Flow's help article, read October 10, 2026.

PlatformPaste the last transcriptCopy it without pasting
MacControl-Command-VControl-Command-C
WindowsAlt-Shift-ZAlt-Shift-X
iPhoneTap the entry's text in Flow History to copy it
AndroidTap the bubble's Paste action when it is offered

Paste last transcript is also in the Mac menu bar icon and the Windows tray icon's menu. One caution: Paste last transcript cancels a dictation that is still processing. Wait for the current one to finish.

Test where the problem is

  1. Dictate a short phrase into Notes on a Mac, or Notepad on Windows. Keep the field focused until the text appears.
  2. If that works, the problem is the other app. Quit and reopen it, then try its text field again.
  3. If nothing works anywhere, go to the checks for your platform below.

On a Mac

  1. Open System Settings, Privacy & Security, Accessibility.
  2. Turn on Wispr Flow. If it is already on, turn it off and on again.
  3. Quit Flow completely and reopen it. Closing its window does not quit the app.
  4. If you changed your keyboard layout, for example to Dvorak, restart Flow so it picks up the new layout.

The Wispr Flow shortcuts page covers the case where another app intercepts the shortcut itself.

On Windows

  • An administrator notice. The message Update admin settings to paste means the target app runs with higher privileges. Run Flow as Administrator. Check the field first, because the notice can appear once even when the paste worked.
  • A different paste key. Some terminals and code editors paste with Control-Shift-V or a right-click, not Control-V.
  • Stale app. Update Flow, quit it from the system tray, and reopen it.

From History

Open History in Flow and click a successful row to copy it. A failed or empty row offers Retry, and a dismissed one offers Recover. The article sets limits on those: the recording must be under 14 days old, and a failed or empty one must be at least 5 seconds long. You also cannot retry while another dictation is running.

How YapToText handles a failed paste

Every dictation goes to History before anything is pasted, including ones you cancel. If macOS has not granted Accessibility, YapToText copies the text to the clipboard instead of failing silently. From History you can copy an entry, or insert it into the app you were just in.

The guide to recovering a lost dictation walks through it for any Mac dictation app, and the Wispr Flow troubleshooting page covers its other failures.

  • Test. Notes or Notepad.
  • Mac. Accessibility off and on, then quit and reopen Flow.
  • Windows. Run as Administrator for elevated apps.

If Wispr changes these shortcuts, open an issue on GitHub and I will update this page. Every one gets read.

Questions

Why is Wispr Flow not pasting text?

On a Mac it is usually the Accessibility permission, which Flow needs to insert text. Turn it off and on in System Settings, then quit and reopen Flow.

How do I get back a Wispr Flow transcript that did not paste?

Press Control-Command-V on a Mac or Alt-Shift-Z on Windows, or copy it from History.

What does Update admin settings to paste mean?

On Windows, the app you are typing in runs with higher privileges than Flow. Run Flow as Administrator.

Can I retry a failed Wispr Flow dictation?

Yes, from History, if the recording is under 14 days old and at least 5 seconds long.

Why does Wispr Flow paste into the wrong place?

The text goes to whichever field has focus when processing finishes, so keep the cursor in the intended field until the words appear.
