Wispr Flow hands-free mode: start and stop without holding a key
By Ryleigh Newman · Published
Hands-free mode lets you dictate in Wispr Flow without holding anything down. On a Mac, press Fn-Space, speak after the ping, and press it again to stop. Double-tapping the push-to-talk key does the same, and so does clicking the Flow Bar. A session runs up to 20 minutes on a computer.
I built YapToText, a different dictation app for the Mac, so read what I say about Wispr Flow with that in mind. Every fact about Wispr Flow here comes from its own help center, read on October 10, 2026. My hands make typing difficult, so whether a key has to be held while I talk is the part of a dictation app I care about most. The articles are Use Flow hands-free and Longer dictation sessions.
This app is completely free. You don't have to make an account. There are no subscriptions, no difficult downloads, and nothing is locked. Made for Apple silicon Macs. Source on GitHub.

The shortcuts
Defaults from Wispr Flow's help article, read October 10, 2026. All can be changed.
| Mac | Mac without Fn | Windows | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hands-free | Fn-Space | Control-Option-Space | Control-Windows-Space |
| Push-to-talk, hold | Fn | Control-Option | Control-Windows |
| Paste Last Transcript | Control-Command-V | Control-Command-V | Alt-Shift-Z |
| Cancel | Esc | Esc | Esc |
Three ways to start
- The hands-free shortcut. Press it, speak after the ping, press it again to stop.
- A double-tap. Tap the push-to-talk shortcut twice within half a second, and recording locks on.
- A click. Click the Flow Bar, which is shown by default. Click its stop icon to finish.
The transcript pastes into the text field your cursor is in. On a Mac, Flow needs the Accessibility and Input Monitoring permissions for this.
Easy ways to lose a dictation
- A third tap. A third rapid tap of the push-to-talk key cancels the dictation. So does pressing the hands-free shortcut twice within half a second.
- Leaving the text field. Keep the cursor in a text field while you talk.
- Pressing again too soon. Shortcuts are ignored while Flow is stopping or processing. Wait, then try again.
If the text did not land, press Paste Last Transcript. It pastes the last finished dictation again, and retries a cancelled or failed one first. A cancellation notice also offers Undo.
The 20 minute limit
On Mac and Windows one session runs up to 20 minutes, on Free and Pro. At 19 minutes Flow plays a sound and shows a warning. At 20 it stops and transcribes everything recorded so far, so the text is kept. To keep going, wait for that transcript to finish and press the shortcut again. On phones the cap is five minutes. The iPhone and Android page covers that.
One warning from the article: if Flow quits or crashes in the middle of a dictation, that session is not resumed or pasted on the next launch.
On a phone
Android has a hands-free lock on its bubble. The iPhone keyboard uses tap controls: tap the microphone to start and the checkmark to stop.
If no key is comfortable
A shortcut can also be a mouse button, a foot pedal or a switch that sends a key. The Wispr Flow foot pedal page covers that route, and the shortcuts page covers which keys Flow accepts.
How YapToText handles it
YapToText is hands-free by default. Tap Right Command once to start, talk, and tap it again to stop. Nothing is held. Hold to talk is the option you turn on, not the default. While you dictate, Space pauses and Esc cancels, and a cancelled dictation is still saved to History.
Wispr Flow from its help center, read October 10, 2026. YapToText from its own settings.
| Wispr Flow | YapToText | |
|---|---|---|
| Default | Hold to talk, with hands-free on a second shortcut | Tap to start and stop |
| Keys to start | Two together, or a double-tap | One |
| Session limit | 20 minutes on a computer | 30 minutes |
| Needs the internet | For transcription | No |
| Price | A weekly free word cap, then Pro | Free |
The one-key dictation page explains why I built it that way, and the guide to typing without hands goes wider.

- Limit. 20 minutes a session.
If Wispr changes these shortcuts, open an issue on GitHub and I will update this page. Every one gets read.
