Wispr Flow Command Mode and Transforms: how to edit and rewrite text, and the shortcuts

Wispr Flow has two tools for changing text you already have. Command Mode takes a spoken instruction: hold a shortcut, say what you want, release. Transforms are saved rewrites on their own keys, such as Polish, that replace selected text in place. Both are off until you turn them on, both are marked experimental or beta on desktop, and both send the text to Wispr to do the work.

I built YapToText, a different dictation app for the Mac, so read what I say about Wispr Flow with that in mind. Every fact about Wispr Flow here comes from its own help center, read on October 10, 2026. The articles are How to use Command Mode and Rewrite text with Transforms and custom prompts.

Command Mode: say the change

  1. Turn it on in Settings, Experimental. It is off by default.
  2. Click into an editable text box, and select text if the command is about a specific part.
  3. Hold the Command Mode shortcut.
  4. Say the instruction in plain words. No wake phrase is needed.
  5. Release the shortcut to run it.

It can edit text, draft a reply, or run a web search. Press Esc or Backspace to cancel. Double-press the shortcut to lock it on, so you do not have to hold the keys, and use the stop button when you are done. The article says access needs a subscription or an unexpired trial, and that on iPhone the in-place editing is not currently working.

What Command Mode sends

Command Mode sends the contents of your current text box and your selected text along with the instruction. If Flow cannot read the selection directly, it tries copying it. That is how it knows what to edit, and it is worth knowing before you use it in a document with private material. The Wispr Flow privacy page covers the settings that control storage.

Transforms: one key per rewrite

Default shortcuts, from Wispr Flow's help article, read October 10, 2026.

  1. Open the Transforms tab in Flow's Hub and select Try it out.
  2. Run the demo on the sample text, then select Turn on Transforms.
  3. In any app, select the text you want rewritten.
  4. Press the transform's shortcut. The text is replaced in place.

A transform accepts 1 to 1,000 words. With nothing selected it uses the readable contents of the text box, and if the field is empty it can use your last dictation from the past 60 seconds. Polish keeps your tone. Prompt Engineer turns loose spoken thoughts into a structured prompt. View Diff compares before and after, with Retry and Undo.

Your own transforms

The Transforms page holds ten: Polish, Prompt Engineer and eight custom prompts. A custom transform needs a name, a prompt and a shortcut. Each shortcut allows up to three keys and must include a modifier or a supported mouse button. The article warns that plain-text addresses become clickable links and that Markdown links are not always preserved, so check a rewrite before you send it.

The same job in YapToText

YapToText's version is called Quick Edit. Select text, tap Right Option, say the change, and tap again. The text is rewritten in place. Quick Edit runs on the Mac, with the model that ships in the app, so the selected text is not sent anywhere. It is free, with no subscription or trial.

  • Saved rewrites. AI Actions are one-shot rewrites you pick from the menu bar panel: Improve Writing, Fix Grammar & Spelling, Make Concise, Summarize, Bullet Points, and your own. They are not on their own keys the way Transforms are.
  • What it lacks. No diff view and no web search.
  • A limit. It cannot read a selection while Secure Input is on, which usually means a password field.

The guide to editing text by voice covers Quick Edit and Apple's own commands, and the Wispr Flow shortcuts page lists the rest of Flow's keys.
