Wispr Flow says Dictation cancelled or Don't tap: why nothing was recorded, and what to do
By Ryleigh Newman · Published
If Wispr Flow starts and no text appears, the dictation was dropped before any audio was captured. There are two causes on Mac and Windows. You released the shortcut within half a second, which Flow reads as a tap. Or another key was pressed during the first second. The fix is to hold only your dictation shortcut for the whole phrase, or to double-tap it and dictate hands-free.
I built YapToText, a dictation app for the Mac, so read what I say about Wispr Flow with that in mind. Every fact about Wispr Flow here comes from its own help center, read on October 11, 2026.

What each message means
From Wispr Flow's help center, read October 11, 2026.
| Message beside the Flow bar | Why you see it |
|---|---|
| Don't tap. Hold down your shortcut | You released within 500 ms of starting, or before the microphone was ready |
| Dictation cancelled | Another key was pressed during the first second of a push-to-talk dictation |
| Transcript cancelled | You pressed Escape or the Cancel button. This one can be undone |
| Select a textbox first, then dictate | No text box was focused. Flow copied the transcript to your clipboard |
The first two disappear after about 6 seconds, and Dictation cancelled plays no sound, so you can miss them. The hold reminder appears at most once an hour and the cancelled notice at most once a minute. Seeing no message does not rule either cause out.
Dictate again, the way Flow expects
- Click into a text box.
- Let go of every key.
- Press and hold only your dictation shortcut. The defaults are Fn on a Mac and Ctrl Win on Windows.
- Wait for the Flow bar to show that recording has started, then speak.
- Keep holding for the whole phrase.
- Release when you finish. The text is inserted at the cursor.
A dictation dropped at the start has nothing to recover, because no usable audio was captured. You can try again right away.
Use hands-free if holding is the problem
Hands-free recording continues after you let go of the keys.
- Double-tap your push-to-talk shortcut.
- Speak.
- Press the shortcut again, or use the stop button, when you finish.
There is also a dedicated hands-free shortcut, Fn Space on a Mac by default. Pressing again within half a second of starting hands-free cancels that attempt. The extra-key cancellation does not apply to hands-free dictations. The hands-free page has the details.
If another shortcut is in the way
Holding your Flow shortcut together with an extra key in the first second cancels the dictation, unless the combination is another Flow shortcut, in which case that action runs. If your shortcut clashes with one you use in an app, change it:
- Open Flow's Settings, General.
- Click Change beside Shortcuts.
- Choose a new shortcut in the Push to talk row.
Each action can have up to four shortcuts, so you can add a second one and keep the first. Mouse buttons are supported. The keyboard shortcuts page lists what Flow accepts.
Get back a dictation you cancelled
- Undo. After Escape or Cancel, select Undo on the Transcript cancelled notice to paste the last text. The small notice lasts about 3 seconds.
- History. Cancelled audio of at least half a second is saved in History and can be retried there.
- Too short. Cancelled audio shorter than half a second is not saved.
- No text box. Click into a text box and paste. Flow already copied the transcript.
Turn the reminders off
Open Flow's Settings, System, Notifications and turn off Suggestions. That hides both reminders. It does not stop the cancellation itself, and it does not hide the notice at the 20-minute session limit.
Tap or hold, by choice
Flow's push to talk is hold by design, with a double-tap for hands-free. YapToText, the free Mac app I built, starts the other way around: its dictation key, Right Command, is tap to start and tap to stop by default, with hold to talk as a setting. Tapping is easier on hands that cannot hold a key down. A tap counts only when no other key was pressed with it, so Command C never starts a dictation. And a cancelled dictation is still transcribed and saved to History by default, marked as canceled. One-key dictation on a Mac covers the idea.
