Wispr Flow error messages: what each one means, and the next step for each

Wispr Flow's errors each point to a different fix. A loading or audio-system error wants a restart. A transcription error wants a retry of the saved audio. A permission error wants a switch in System Settings. The table below matches each message to its next step, as Wispr's help center gives it.

I built YapToText, a dictation app for the Mac, so read what I say about Wispr Flow with that in mind. Every fact about Wispr Flow here comes from its own help center, read on October 11, 2026.

Each message and its next step

From Wispr Flow's help center, read October 11, 2026.

MessageNext step
Flow is having trouble loading or startingChoose Restart Flow. If it repeats, use Contact us
Audio system failed to loadRestart Flow, then contact support if audio still will not start
Something's not rightTranscription failed. Let recovery finish, then use Retry or Open History
Is your internet connectedCheck the network, then retry the kept audio after reconnecting
Microphone Permission Required, or Microphone access is disabledUse Grant Permission or Open Settings, then turn on microphone access
Accessibility Permission RequiredChoose Open Settings and grant the access it asks for
Microphone disconnectedUse Insert to recover the text captured so far, then reconnect or pick another input
Taking longer than usualWait. It clears when the text pastes
Transcription session endedA desktop recording reached 20 minutes. Use Recover text, or the notice's Copy button
Connection lost, or Couldn't reach Wispr FlowCheck the connection, then any VPN, proxy or firewall

On a Mac or PC the internet message can be advisory while recording continues. A session-limit or organization-policy notice is not a microphone failure, so follow that notice or ask your administrator.

Four quick checks before anything else

  1. Open any website. If it will not load, reconnect before testing Flow.
  2. Quit and reopen Flow, or choose Restart Flow if the error offers it, then dictate one short phrase.
  3. Update Flow before repeating a recording that failed.
  4. Confirm the microphone. If you connected a new one and declined Flow's Switch prompt, the old input is still selected. Test the microphone in another recording app: if it is silent there too, the problem is the system, not Flow.

Setup to check on a Mac

  • Permissions. Turn on Wispr Flow under System Settings, Privacy and Security, in both Microphone and Accessibility.
  • Microphone. Select a working one in Flow. With a MacBook's lid closed, use an external microphone. If Bluetooth is unreliable, compare with a built-in or wired one.
  • Restart the Mac if restarting Flow did not help.

On Windows, the matching switches are under Settings, Privacy and security, Microphone, for both microphone access and desktop-app access.

Get back what you said

Open History on the device where you dictated. A failed dictation appears in Recent Activity with a Retry row as soon as it fails. Use Retry on saved audio, or Recover on a dismissed transcript. Recovery needs audio that was kept: a capture error, a deleted recording or a storage policy can leave nothing to retry. If you start a new dictation while the last one is still finishing, the new one waits its turn. The slow or down page has the retry limits.

Before you reset

Reset and restart deletes local data, including transcription history. The help center says to use it only when Wispr's support tells you to. Contact support first, from Help, Talk to support on the desktop, with the exact error, your device and system version, your microphone and what you tried.

Fewer things that can fail

Several of these errors exist because Flow depends on a connection and a server. YapToText, the free dictation app I built, transcribes on an Apple silicon Mac, so it has no connection error, no sign-in and no service status. It still needs the same two macOS permissions any dictation app needs, Microphone and Accessibility. It is Mac only, and it does not sync across devices the way Flow does. Wispr Flow not working walks through symptoms that come with no message, and the microphone page covers silent or missing input.

The short version

  • Loading or audio error. Restart Flow.
  • Something's not right. Retry from the notice or from History.
  • Permission error. System Settings, Privacy and Security.
  • Microphone disconnected. Insert what was captured, then reconnect.
  • Reset. Only on support's advice. It deletes local history.

If Wispr rewords these messages, open an issue on GitHub and I will update this page. Every one gets read.
