Wispr Flow and microphones: how to pick one, and what to do when it hears nothing
By Ryleigh Newman · Published
To choose a microphone in Wispr Flow on a Mac or Windows PC, right-click the Flow Bar, or open Settings, General, Microphone, Change, and pick a device by name. Auto-detect is the default. The change applies when your next dictation starts. If dictation captures silence, the usual causes are a hardware mute switch, the Microphone permission, or a closed MacBook lid, which makes the built-in microphone unavailable.
I built YapToText, a different dictation app for the Mac, so read what I say about Wispr Flow with that in mind. Every fact about Wispr Flow here comes from its own help center, read on October 10, 2026.

Choose a microphone
From Wispr Flow's help article Connect and choose a microphone for Flow, read October 10, 2026.
| Option | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Auto-detect | Let Flow pick. On a Mac it uses your highest-ranked available microphone. |
| Built-in mic | Use the Mac's own microphone while wearing headphones. A closed MacBook needs an external one. |
| A device name | Use one particular headset or microphone. |
| Show other devices | Reveal virtual inputs. They are never chosen automatically. |
Opening the picker starts a live test: speak and watch the level meter. Only the selected microphone shows a level, so select each in turn to compare. When you plug in a new microphone, Flow can ask whether to switch.
Rank your microphones on a Mac
Choose Edit Ranking in the picker and drag your physical microphones into the order you prefer. Auto-detect then uses the highest one that is connected. Disconnected devices are greyed out, and the trash icon forgets one. Ranking goes by device name, so a device that reports a different name after reconnecting can be treated as new.
AirPods and Bluetooth
Bluetooth headsets work, and Wispr's troubleshooting article says Flow can show AirPods warnings or suggest a wired microphone. Its advice when input is silent is to compare a built-in or wired microphone with Bluetooth. On an iPhone there is no device picker: in Flow's Settings, Audio, Use Built-In Mic is on by default and records through the phone while you still hear through your headphones. Turn it off to use the Bluetooth microphone.
For a Mac, the AirPods dictation guide explains what happens to sound quality when AirPods switch to their microphone.
Dictating quietly
- Move the microphone closer. Wispr says a microphone within a few inches of your mouth captures quieter speech. Lean toward a laptop mic or bring a headset boom near your lips.
- Speak softly but clearly. Lowering your voice is fine. Mumbling is not.
- Turn off Flow's sounds. On Mac and Windows, Dictation and notification sounds is in Settings, System, Sound.
Quiet speech does not change what people near you can hear, which is Wispr's own caution.
If Wispr Flow does not detect the microphone
- Check for a hardware mute switch on the headset, keyboard or laptop.
- Record a short clip in Voice Memos. If that is silent too, the problem is the microphone or macOS, not Flow.
- On a Mac, enable Wispr Flow in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone. On Windows, both Microphone access and Let desktop apps access your microphone must be on.
- Open Settings, General, Microphone, Change, select the microphone by name and watch the level.
- If every microphone is silent, Wispr suggests switching the output device to the built-in speakers in System Settings, Sound, Output, then testing again.
- Quit Flow from its menu bar menu and reopen it.
A MacBook with its lid closed shows Your laptop lid is closed, because the built-in microphone cannot be used. Releasing the shortcut too quickly can also produce a no-audio notice.
Where the audio goes next
Whatever the microphone, Wispr Flow sends the recording to its cloud to become text. Its privacy page says transcription always happens in the cloud, on every plan. The Wispr Flow privacy page follows the audio from there.
YapToText, my free Mac app, keeps the audio on the Mac: the speech model runs there. You pick its microphone in Settings, General, Microphone, or from the Input picker in the menu bar panel. If the chosen microphone is unplugged, it falls back to the system default, and the microphone lets go about a second after each dictation. The microphone guide for Mac dictation covers which kind of microphone helps most.

The short version
- Pick. Right-click the Flow Bar, or Settings, General, Microphone, Change.
- Rank. Edit Ranking on a Mac. Auto-detect uses the top one connected.
- Quiet. Microphone within a few inches, speak clearly, sounds off.
- Silent. Mute switch, permission, lid closed, then restart Flow.
- Audio. Goes to Wispr's cloud on every plan.
If a step here no longer matches the app, open an issue on GitHub. Every one gets read.
