Wispr Flow muting or pausing music while you dictate: the settings, and the fix when audio stays silent
By Ryleigh Newman · Published
Wispr Flow has two settings for other audio while you dictate. Mute all audio while dictating is in Settings, System, Sound, off by default on a Mac and on by default on Windows. Pause music while dictating is an experimental option in Settings, Experimental, off by default. Turning one on turns the other off. If your music stays silent afterward, toggle the mute switch and dictate once more, then set the volume by hand.
I built YapToText, a dictation app for the Mac, so read what I say about Wispr Flow with that in mind. Every fact about Wispr Flow here comes from its own help center, read on October 11, 2026.
This app is completely free. You don't have to make an account. There are no subscriptions, no difficult downloads, and nothing is locked. Made for Apple silicon Macs. Source on GitHub.

Turn muting on or off
- Open Settings from the Wispr Flow sidebar. On a Mac the shortcut is Command comma.
- Go to System, Sound.
- Switch Mute all audio while dictating on or off.
- Play something, start a dictation, and check that it goes quiet and comes back when you stop.
With mute on, Flow mutes only when it detects playback as the dictation starts, and restores the sound when you stop. Muting takes about 300 ms, so you may hear a moment of audio. The settings are per device and do not sync.
From Wispr Flow's article on auto-mute, read October 11, 2026.
| Platform | What gets muted |
|---|---|
| Mac | Your whole default output device, not only the music app |
| Windows | Each app on the default output device, with each app's volume restored afterward |
Pause instead of mute
Pausing keeps your place in a song or podcast, and works on outputs with no mute control. It is experimental and off by default.
- Open Settings, Experimental.
- Turn on Pause music while dictating.
The help center says the Experimental page needs a personal subscription, an active trial, or enterprise membership. Only supported media that is playing is paused, and Flow resumes only what it paused. Calls in Zoom, Teams and Slack do not trigger it. If pausing fails, Flow does not fall back to muting.
If the audio stays muted
- Reconnect the output device if it dropped during the dictation.
- Turn Mute all audio while dictating off in Settings, System, Sound.
- Turn it on again.
- Start a dictation, then stop it, so Flow retries the restore.
- If it is still silent, raise the output volume by hand.
- Bluetooth headsets on a Mac. A headset changing audio modes can delay the restore for up to about 5.5 seconds after you stop.
- A headset can mute itself. Opening a headset's microphone can mute its output even with both settings off. Flow may suggest a wired microphone after it sees that.
- Three tries. On a Mac, Flow stops trying to restore the volume after three failed attempts or if the device disappears. After that, adjust it yourself.
- You switched outputs. Flow restores the device it muted, not the one you switched to.
- It was already muted. Audio you muted before dictating stays muted afterward.
Why music is muted when nothing is playing
The help center explains that some music and podcast players keep an audio stream open while paused, so on a Mac Flow can count them as playing when nothing is audible. On macOS 14.2 and later Flow's own dictation sounds are left out of detection. On 14.1 and earlier they can count as playback. Quitting Flow normally restores what it muted and resumes what it paused, which is not guaranteed after a force quit.
How YapToText handles music
YapToText, the free Mac dictation app I built, pauses and does not mute. Its switch is Pause music and video while dictating, on the Dictation page, on by default. Playback pauses when a dictation starts and resumes when it ends, and only what it paused is resumed: ending a dictation never starts something that was not playing.
It works with Music, video players such as QuickTime Player, and video in Safari and web-based apps. Calls and games never trigger it. I have not verified every browser, so I do not claim them. The Wispr Flow microphone page covers AirPods and input devices, and AirPods dictation on a Mac explains the Bluetooth audio-mode switch behind most of these problems.

The short version
- Mute. Settings, System, Sound. Off by default on a Mac.
- Pause. Settings, Experimental. Needs a subscription or trial.
- Still silent. Toggle mute, dictate once, then set the volume by hand.
- Bluetooth. Expect a delay of a few seconds, or use a wired microphone.
If Wispr moves these settings, open an issue on GitHub and I will update this page. Every one gets read.

Questions
How do I stop Wispr Flow from muting my music?
Open Settings, System, Sound and turn off Mute all audio while dictating. Also check that Pause music while dictating is off under Experimental.
Can Wispr Flow pause music and not mute it?
Yes, with the experimental Pause music while dictating option in Settings, Experimental. It needs a subscription, trial or enterprise membership.
Why is my sound still muted after using Wispr Flow?
The restore can fail if the output device changed or disconnected. Toggle the mute switch, dictate once more, and adjust the volume by hand if needed.
Does Wispr Flow mute audio on iPhone?
No. The help center says auto-mute is desktop only, on Mac and Windows.
