Using a foot pedal with Wispr Flow: what it accepts, and how to set it up

A foot pedal can start Wispr Flow, but not with a single plain key. Wispr's help center says a shortcut must include a modifier key or a valid mouse button, and that standalone letters, numbers and punctuation are rejected. So program the pedal to send a combination such as Control Option Space, or Caps Lock, which Wispr allows alone for Push to talk or Hands-free. Then record that combination in Settings, General, Shortcuts.

I built YapToText, a different dictation app for the Mac, so read what I say about Wispr Flow with that in mind. Every fact about Wispr Flow here comes from its own help center, read on October 10, 2026. I have not tested any pedal with either app, and I name no brand as working.

Steps

  1. Set the pedal, in its own software, to send a modifier combination such as Control Option Space.
  2. In Wispr Flow, open Settings, General, Shortcuts and click Change.
  3. On the Hands-free row, click the plus button and press the pedal.
  4. Click Done, then tap the pedal in a text field, speak, and tap again.

What Wispr Flow will accept from a pedal

From Wispr Flow's help article Customize keyboard and mouse shortcuts, read October 10, 2026.

What the pedal sendsAcceptedWhy
One letter, number or punctuation keyNoStandalone keys are rejected: This shortcut is not allowed
A combination with Control, Option, Command, Shift or Fn, up to three keysYesThe modifier rule is met
Caps Lock aloneYes, for Push to talk or Hands-freeWispr's stated exception. It no longer toggles capitals when assigned
A mouse button (Middle Click, Mouse 4 or 5)Only from an eligible mouseA recognized mouse with more than three buttons, or a supported Logitech MX model
Command Space, Command Delete, Command Control FNoBlocked on Mac

Each action can hold up to four shortcuts, so the pedal's combination can sit beside your keyboard one. Nothing is replaced.

Set it up

  1. In the pedal's own software, set the pedal to send a modifier combination you do not use elsewhere. Control Option Space is a sensible pick: it is the hands-free default Wispr itself sets on Macs without an Fn key.
  2. Click the Wispr Flow menu bar icon, then open Settings, General, Shortcuts, and click Change.
  3. On the Hands-free row, click the plus button, then press the pedal. Keyboard combinations save when you release.
  4. Click Done once Shortcut saved appears.
  5. Click into a text field, tap the pedal, speak after the ping, and tap again to paste.

Fn is the default key on a Mac, but it belongs to Apple keyboards. Wispr's onboarding switches to Control Option when it does not detect an Fn key, so plan on a Control or Option combination for a pedal.

Hold the pedal, or tap it

  • Hold: Push to talk. Bind the pedal's combination to Push to talk and dictation runs while the pedal is down. This needs a pedal that holds its keys down for as long as you press, so look for a hold or press-and-release option in the pedal's software.
  • Tap: Hands-free. Bind it to Hands-free and one tap starts, the next tap stops and pastes. A pedal that only sends a quick press works here.
  • Careful with double taps. Wispr says a double-press of the hands-free shortcut within half a second of starting cancels instead of pasting, and a quick double tap of Push to talk starts hands-free. A bouncy pedal can trip both.

If your foot tends to bounce, tap mode with a firm single press is the safer choice. Wispr also stops a session on its own for no audio or after 20 minutes, with a warning at 19.

If the pedal does nothing

  • The shortcut was rejected. The previous binding stays. Read the message, then send a different combination from the pedal.
  • Another app has Secure Keyboard Entry on. Wispr says this can block key-based shortcuts while modifier-only holds keep working. Quit the responsible app, such as a password manager, and test again.
  • You are in a microphone test or onboarding. Dictation shortcuts are ignored during microphone tests and before onboarding reaches the dictation step.
  • Accessibility is off. Enable Wispr Flow in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Accessibility. Shortcuts and dictation need it.

A pedal that sends no key: MIDI and controller pedals

A MIDI sustain pedal, or a switch plugged into a game or adaptive controller, sends no key at all. InputConfig, my free Mac app, reads those and sends keys for them: a row with the pedal as input and a Keyboard Key output of Control Option Space turns the pedal into that combination. Its MIDI page explains that a sustain pedal acts as an on and off switch. I have not tested InputConfig's combination against Wispr Flow's shortcut recorder, so try it before you rely on it.

The free route: a pedal that sends one plain key

YapToText takes the opposite approach to keys. Its dictation key can be any single key, so a pedal that sends one plain key works as it is. On the Dictation page, Keys card, click the key field and press the pedal, and whatever key it sends becomes the trigger. Choose Tap to start / stop, or Hold to talk, where releasing the pedal always ends the session.

Figure 1. YapToText's Keys card. Click the key field and press the pedal: the key it sends becomes the dictation key, modifier or not.

It is free on the Mac App Store, runs on the Mac with no account, and has no weekly word allowance. It is Mac only, for Apple silicon on macOS 14 or later. The one-key dictation guide has a ten-second test for any pedal or switch, and the adaptive controller guide covers switches and controller pedals.

The short version

  • Wispr Flow. The pedal must send a modifier combination or Caps Lock. Single plain keys are rejected.
  • Where. Settings, General, Shortcuts, Change, then press the pedal on the Hands-free or Push to talk row.
  • Tap or hold. Hands-free for taps, Push to talk for holding the pedal down.
  • MIDI or controller pedals. InputConfig turns them into a key combination. Untested against Wispr Flow.
  • YapToText. Takes any single key, so a plain-key pedal works directly, free.

If you have a pedal working with either app, or one that will not, open an issue on GitHub. Every one gets read.

Questions

Can I use a foot pedal with Wispr Flow?

Yes, if the pedal sends a modifier combination such as Control Option Space, or Caps Lock. Wispr Flow rejects single letters, numbers and punctuation as shortcuts.

Why does Wispr Flow reject my pedal's key?

Its help center says a shortcut must include a modifier key or a valid mouse button. Reprogram the pedal to send a combination of up to three keys.

Can a pedal be push to talk in Wispr Flow?

Yes. Bind the pedal's combination to Push to talk and use a pedal that holds its keys down while pressed.

Does a MIDI sustain pedal work for dictation?

Not by itself, because it sends no key. InputConfig can turn it into a key or a combination on a Mac.

Is there a dictation app that accepts a single-key pedal?

YapToText does. Its dictation key can be any single key, so a pedal that sends one plain key works directly.
