Wispr Flow on iPhone and Android: setup, the Action Button, limits, and what is not supported
By Ryleigh Newman · Published
Wispr Flow runs on iPhone as a keyboard and on Android phones as a floating bubble. Its help center says iPad is not supported, and that Android tablets and foldables may work but are not optimized. Both phone apps need an internet connection, cap one dictation at five minutes, and share a free allowance of 1,000 words a week.
I built YapToText, a different dictation app for the Mac, so read what I say about Wispr Flow with that in mind. Every fact about Wispr Flow here comes from its own help center, read on October 10, 2026. YapToText is a Mac app only, so on a phone I have nothing to sell you.
This app is completely free. You don't have to make an account. There are no subscriptions, no difficult downloads, and nothing is locked. Made for Apple silicon Macs. Source on GitHub.

Where it runs
From Wispr Flow's help article Supported devices and system requirements, read October 10, 2026.
| Device | Supported | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Yes | iOS 18.3 or later. The app runs in portrait only |
| iPad | No | The help center lists iPad as not supported |
| Android phone | Yes | Android 13 or newer, with an accelerometer |
| Android tablets and foldables | May work | Not officially optimized |
| Chromebook, Linux | No | Listed as not supported |
| Apple Watch | Not listed | The requirements page names no watch app |
| Mac | Yes | macOS 12 or later, Apple silicon or Intel |
| Windows | Yes | Windows 10 or 11 on x64. Windows on ARM is not supported |
Set up the keyboard on iPhone
- Install Wispr Flow from the App Store, open it once, and sign in. The keyboard appears in iOS Settings only after the first launch.
- Open the Settings app, then General, Keyboard, Keyboards.
- Tap Add New Keyboard and select Wispr Flow under Third-Party Keyboards.
- Tap Wispr Flow in the list, turn on Allow Full Access, and tap Allow.
- In any app, touch and hold the globe key and choose Wispr Flow.
- Tap the microphone, allow microphone access if asked, speak, and tap the checkmark.
Inside the Flow app, dictation starts in place. In other apps the keyboard opens Flow to record and returns you to where you were. Without a connection the keyboard shows No Network in place of its controls.
The Action Button
- In Wispr Flow, open Settings, General, Action button shortcut.
- Follow the prompts to add the Quick Dictation to Clipboard shortcut.
- Open iPhone Settings, Action Button, swipe to Shortcut, and select Quick Dictation to Clipboard.
- Press and hold the Action Button until dictation starts, speak, then press and hold again to stop.
With the Flow keyboard active the text goes into the field you are in. Outside a text box it is saved to the clipboard. The article lists iPhone 15 Pro models, the iPhone 16 and 17 families and iPhone Air, and says the setup row is hidden on other iPhones.
Set up the bubble on Android
- Microphone. To record your voice.
- Display over other apps. To show the bubble. The article says this step cannot be skipped.
- Accessibility. To insert the dictated text. It cannot be skipped either.
Those are the three permissions setup asks for. Android picks the microphone, and Flow has no microphone picker of its own. The Android article says offline transcription is unavailable.
Limits on a phone
From Wispr Flow's help center, read October 10, 2026. The free plan page covers the desktop cap.
| Limit | What the help center says |
|---|---|
| One dictation | Five minutes on Android and on iPhone. Android warns at one minute left, then stops and submits what you said |
| On a computer, for comparison | Twenty minutes per session on Mac and Windows |
| Free words | 1,000 mobile words a week, shared between iPhone and Android, and separate from the 2,000 desktop words |
| Hard stop | Free dictation is blocked at 1,500 words until the weekly reset or an upgrade |
| Pro | No word limit on any device |
Remove it from a phone
The uninstall guide covers signing out, removing the iPhone keyboard, and what signing out deletes.
On a Mac instead
YapToText runs only on Apple silicon Macs with macOS 14 or later. On the Mac it is free with no word cap, needs no account, and works with no connection because the speech model runs on the computer. The page on Wispr Flow alternatives by platform covers phones and PCs, and the Wispr Flow offline page covers why Flow needs the internet.
This app is completely free. You don't have to make an account. There are no subscriptions, no difficult downloads, and nothing is locked. Made for Apple silicon Macs. Source on GitHub.

If Wispr Flow adds iPad support or changes these limits, open an issue on GitHub and I will update this page. Every one gets read.
