Wispr Flow on iPhone looks always on: why the orange dot stays, and how to turn it off
By Ryleigh Newman · Published
After you dictate with Wispr Flow on an iPhone, the orange dot or the Dynamic Island pill can stay on. That is because Flow keeps its session open in the background so the next dictation starts quickly, and closes it by itself after 5 minutes by default. To end it now, tap the check button on the Flow Keyboard, or the stop button in the Dynamic Island. To shorten the wait, change Disable Flow after in Flow's settings.
I built YapToText, a dictation app for the Mac, so read what I say about Wispr Flow with that in mind. Every fact about Wispr Flow here comes from its own help center, read on October 11, 2026.
This app is completely free. You don't have to make an account. There are no subscriptions, no difficult downloads, and nothing is locked. Made for Apple silicon Macs. Source on GitHub.
What the indicators mean
- Orange dot. An app is using the microphone. Green would mean the camera.
- Control Center's recent-use line. It names an app that used the microphone recently, which is not the same as recording now.
- Flow's Control Center toggle. Recording with a stop icon means a session is active. Idle means Flow no longer considers one active, even if an indicator lingers.
- The Dynamic Island pill. Separate from the orange dot. It can remain after the microphone is released, and can read on while idle.
Flow's help center says it releases the microphone when recording stops, and that a pill reading idle is a session kept ready, not a recording.
End the session now
From Wispr Flow's help article on the iPhone microphone indicator, read October 11, 2026.
| Where you are | How to stop |
|---|---|
| Flow Keyboard | Tap the check button, which stops and keeps your transcript |
| Dynamic Island or Live Activity | Tap the power or stop button |
| Action Button set to Flow | Press and hold, then release |
| Control Center | Turn off the Flow toggle |
One warning from that article: the X on the Flow Keyboard cancels and discards the dictation. Use the check button if you want the text.
Make it switch off sooner
- Open Flow's Settings, then General.
- Tap Disable Flow after.
- Choose Immediately, 5 min, 15 min, 1 hour or Never.
The default is 5 minutes. Never keeps the session and its indicator until something else stops it. The setting belongs to each iPhone, so set it on each one. Auto-stop only applies while Flow is in the background with its keyboard inactive, and it never interrupts a dictation in progress.
If the dot is stuck
- Tap the microphone or stop control again, in case Flow closed mid-dictation.
- Open Flow. Launching it clears leftover Live Activities.
- In iOS Settings, Wispr Flow, turn Live Activities off and on again, then run a short dictation.
- Force-quit Flow from the app switcher and reopen it.
If the orange dot is still there after that, the help center says to contact support.
When dictation stops by itself
A single dictation on iOS has a five-minute limit, after which Flow stops and processes what it captured. A phone call, or switching or unplugging a headset, can also stop it. If iOS reports low memory, Flow cancels and discards the audio. A notification can take you to the saved transcript when a dictation is interrupted or reaches the limit.
The same question on a Mac
YapToText, the dictation app I built, has no iPhone app, so it is not an answer on a phone. On a Mac it works the other way round from a kept-open session: audio is captured only while you dictate, between the tap that starts and the tap that stops, and it is transcribed on the Mac. Wispr Flow on iPhone and Android covers the phone apps, and the Wispr Flow privacy page covers what it sends and stores.

The short version
- Why. Flow keeps a session open so the next dictation is quick.
- How long. 5 minutes by default.
- End it. Check button on the keyboard, or stop in the Dynamic Island.
- Shorten it. Settings, General, Disable Flow after.
- Stuck. Open Flow, toggle Live Activities, then force-quit.
If Wispr changes this on iPhone, open an issue on GitHub and I will update this page. Every one gets read.
