Typeless on Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android: where it runs and how it starts
By Ryleigh Newman · Published
Typeless runs on more platforms than most dictation apps. Its downloads page offers macOS, Windows and Linux, and its phone apps are on the App Store and Google Play. Its help center lists macOS on both Apple silicon and Intel. On a desktop you press one key to start and again to stop: Fn on a Mac, Right Alt on Windows.
I built YapToText, a different dictation app for the Mac, so read what I say about Typeless with that in mind. Every fact about Typeless here comes from typeless.com and its help center, read on October 10, 2026. YapToText runs on Macs only, so on Windows or Linux this page is information, not a pitch.
This app is completely free. You don't have to make an account. There are no subscriptions, no difficult downloads, and nothing is locked. Made for Apple silicon Macs. Source on GitHub.

Every platform
From typeless.com/downloads and the Typeless help center, read October 10, 2026.
| Platform | Available | How dictation starts |
|---|---|---|
| macOS, Apple silicon and Intel | Yes | Press Fn once, speak, press again |
| Windows | Yes | Press Right Alt once, speak, press again |
| Linux | Yes, a download is listed | Its help center has a Linux release notes page with no entries yet |
| iPhone and iPad | Yes, App Store | Tap Speak on the Typeless keyboard |
| Android | Yes, Google Play | Tap Speak on the Typeless keyboard |
The shortcut can be changed. If Fn or your chosen key does nothing, its help center says the key may be tied to another system action: open System Settings, Keyboard, and clear the conflict.
Install it on a Mac
- Go to the downloads page and click Download for macOS.
- Open Typeless.dmg and drag Typeless to Applications.
- Sign in with Google, Apple or your email address.
- Allow Accessibility, so it can put text into any text field, and the microphone.
An account is required. Both permissions are in System Settings, Privacy & Security.
The same on every platform: it needs the internet
Wherever you run it, Typeless turns your speech into text on its servers, not on your device. The Typeless privacy page covers what it keeps. Its help center says transcripts are stored locally on your device and can be viewed within the Keep History period you choose.
One dictation can run for 9 minutes. At 8 minutes a 60-second countdown appears on the voice bar, and at the limit Typeless saves what you said so far in History.
What it costs on each
The plans are the same across platforms: a free plan with a word limit, and Pro at $12 a member a month billed yearly, or $30 billed monthly. The Typeless pricing page has the details and the discounts page lists what Typeless offers students and through referrals.
On Linux or Windows, and you want it local
If the point is speech recognition on your own machine, look at the open source apps instead. The alternatives page for Windows, Linux and phones lists which apps have builds for each, from their own pages, and the open source dictation page covers the Mac ones.
On a Mac
On a Mac, YapToText does the same job free, with no word limit and no account, and the speech never leaves the Mac. One key, Right Command, starts and stops it, and its cleanup model runs locally too. It needs an Apple silicon Mac on macOS 14 or later, so on an Intel Mac Typeless is the one that runs. The Typeless alternative page compares them side by side.
