Wispr Flow updates: when they install, how to update now, and what to check afterward
By Ryleigh Newman · Published
Wispr Flow downloads updates in the background on Mac and Windows and installs them when you are not dictating. There is no setting to turn automatic updates off. To update now, open Flow's menu bar icon and choose Update ready, restart now. If Flow stops listening or typing after an update, the usual cause is a permission that needs to be switched off and on again.
I built YapToText, a dictation app for the Mac, so read what I say about Wispr Flow with that in mind. Every fact about Wispr Flow here comes from its own help center, read on October 11, 2026.
This app is completely free. You don't have to make an account. There are no subscriptions, no difficult downloads, and nothing is locked. Made for Apple silicon Macs. Source on GitHub.

Update Wispr Flow now
- Finish any dictation or Notetaker recording.
- Click the Flow icon in the menu bar on a Mac, or the system tray on Windows.
- Choose Update ready, restart now. If no update is downloaded yet, use Check for updates.
The Settings sidebar also has an update button beside the installed version, and on a Mac the update row appears in the Wispr Flow application menu. Restart anyway quits Flow at once and ends a dictation or meeting recording in progress. The help center warns that audio not yet saved may be lost.
Why an update has not installed yet
A downloaded update waits for a safe moment. The help center lists the conditions:
- Not while recording. Installation waits while a dictation or a Notetaker recording is active.
- Twenty minutes of quiet. It waits until more than 20 minutes after your last dictation action.
- Awake and online. It needs an online session that is not locked or asleep.
- Not while you are in Flow. A further hold applies while the main Flow window, the Notetaker notepad or Scratchpad is focused and you used the computer in the last 5 minutes.
After three hours of that last hold, Flow shows Update ready with Later and Restart now, and does not force a restart. If a newer release arrives while one is waiting, Flow replaces the download when it can.
On a work computer
From Wispr Flow's article on update timing, read October 11, 2026.
| Schedule | Next update check |
|---|---|
| auto, the default | Automatic background checks |
| weekly | 7 days after the last successful check |
| bi-weekly | 14 days after |
| monthly | 30 days after |
An IT team can set the schedule through device management. Then the menu shows the date of the next check, the update button says updates are managed by your organization, and a manual check cannot bypass the schedule.
If Flow stopped working after an update on a Mac
Microphone and Accessibility are separate permissions, and a system or app update can leave one of them not fully granted. To grant them again:
- Quit Flow from its menu bar icon.
- Open System Settings, Privacy and Security, Microphone.
- Switch Wispr Flow off, then on again.
- Turn on Wispr Flow under Privacy and Security, Accessibility.
- Reopen Flow from Applications or the Dock. Flow will not launch from outside the Applications folder.
- Repeated microphone prompts. The permission was not fully granted. Toggle it off and on, then restart Flow.
- Flow is not in the list. Reinstall Flow. If it still does not appear, the help center says to contact support with your macOS version.
- Shortcuts fail with Accessibility granted. If Space push-to-talk and Escape fail while Fn hold-to-talk works, another app's secure keyboard input may be responsible, and granting permissions again will not fix that.
Screen Recording is not needed for basic dictation. On Windows the switch is system microphone access, under the microphone privacy page.
If the update itself fails
After three failed installation attempts, Flow pauses automatic installation for 24 hours and shows There was an error updating Flow. During the pause, restarting does not install a new version. Choose Restart Flow in the notification, and Contact us if the error continues.
How YapToText updates
YapToText, the free dictation app I built, makes no update checks of its own. The App Store version updates through the App Store, on whatever schedule you set in macOS, and nothing restarts mid-dictation because the app does not update itself. It needs the same two permissions, Microphone and Accessibility. The dictation app updates page tracks what each app has shipped lately, and Wispr Flow not working covers the wider set of failures.

The short version
- Update now. Flow's menu, Update ready, restart now.
- Not installing. It waits 20 minutes after your last dictation, and while you record.
- Broken after an update. Toggle Microphone off and on, check Accessibility, reopen from Applications.
- Update error. Automatic installs pause for 24 hours after three failures.
If Wispr changes how updates work, open an issue on GitHub and I will update this page. Every one gets read.

Questions
How do I update Wispr Flow?
Click the Flow icon in the menu bar or system tray and choose Update ready, restart now, or Check for updates. Flow also updates itself in the background.
Can I turn off Wispr Flow automatic updates?
No. The help center says there is no setting to turn automatic updates on or off. An organization can set the schedule through device management.
Why did Wispr Flow stop working after an update?
Often a permission needs granting again. Quit Flow, toggle Microphone off and on in System Settings, check Accessibility, and reopen Flow from Applications.
Will a Wispr Flow update interrupt my dictation?
Not by itself. Installation waits while you dictate or record. Choosing Restart anyway yourself does end the current recording.
Why is my Wispr Flow update not installing?
It waits until 20 minutes after your last dictation, with the computer awake and online. After three failed attempts it pauses for 24 hours.
