MacWhisper not working: what each symptom means, and the fix

When MacWhisper is not working, start with which edition you have. Dictation into other apps exists only in the version sold on macwhisper.com, not in the App Store edition, Whisper Transcription, so on that edition a dictation shortcut can never work. After that, the usual causes are an app whose text field MacWhisper cannot detect, a model that does not support the feature you want, such as speaker recognition, an Intel Mac or a crashed-into compatibility mode making transcription slow, and a license activated on too many devices.

I built YapToText, a different app for the Mac, and it comes up once, near the end. Everything about MacWhisper here comes from its own help center, read on October 6, 2026, with each article linked under Sources. I have not reproduced these problems myself, so the steps are MacWhisper's, in my words.

Steps

  1. Check whether you have the macwhisper.com version or the App Store edition.
  2. For one app that refuses dictation, turn on Allow dictation everywhere in Settings, Advanced.
  3. For speakers, choose a WhisperKit model with the Speaker Recognition badge.
  4. For slow transcription on Apple silicon, turn off Disable all GPU usage under WhisperKit.

Check the edition before anything else: half the dictation questions end there.

If dictation does nothing

MacWhisper's dictation types into any text field from a shortcut you set, but only in one of its two editions. If you installed Whisper Transcription from the App Store, dictation into other apps is not there to fix.

  1. Check the edition. MacWhisper's help center says dictation is only in the version sold on macwhisper.com, because of restrictions on Mac App Store apps.
  2. Turn it on. In the macwhisper.com version, click Dictation on the home screen, which walks you through setup, or open Settings, Dictation, and set a keyboard shortcut.
  3. One app refuses. MacWhisper checks for an active text field before it types, and says some apps that do not follow standard macOS practice are not detected. Settings, Advanced, Allow dictation everywhere skips the check. MacWhisper asks you to email it the name of the app.
  4. AI cleanup does nothing. Its AI dictation prompts need MacWhisper Pro and your own AI key with a payment method on it.

The MacWhisper alternative page compares its dictation with an app built for dictation first.

If speaker recognition is missing

Speaker recognition depends on the model, not on a switch. Only WhisperKit models, and the ElevenLabs and Deepgram cloud providers, label speakers.

  • Pick a model that supports it. In the model list, the local models that can do it carry a green Speaker Recognition badge, and they all run on the WhisperKit engine.
  • Where it never applies. Dictation, which assumes one speaker, and Transcribe Podcast, where each imported track is one speaker.
  • Wrong names. MacWhisper names them Speaker 1, Speaker 2 and so on. Click a name in the sidebar to rename it, and right-click a speaker to merge two that are the same person.
  • It is a Pro feature. The free version exports subtitles. Speaker recognition is part of Pro.

If transcription is slow, empty or repeats itself

Slow, empty or looping transcripts each have their own article. On an Apple silicon Mac, slow usually means compatibility mode. On an Intel Mac, it is the hardware.

  • Slow on Apple silicon. MacWhisper says a past crash can switch it into a compatibility mode, most often on M1 Macs. In Settings, Advanced, WhisperKit, make sure Disable all GPU usage is off.
  • Slow on Intel. Intel Macs lack the machine learning hardware, so on-device transcription is much slower. MacWhisper suggests one of its Cloud Transcription providers.
  • Finished without any text. Usually audio that is too short or decoded badly. In Settings, Advanced, switch Downmix to Mono on or off and try again.
  • Repeated words at the end. Switch to a WhisperKit model, which MacWhisper says does not have this problem.
  • File could not be opened. Even a supported format can be encoded in a way it cannot read. MacWhisper asks you to send the file to its support address.
  • Chinese in the wrong script. MacWhisper says Whisper was trained on a mix of Simplified and Traditional. A custom prompt in the script you want, in Settings, Advanced, Prompt, can steer it, without a guarantee.
  • Two languages in one file. Not supported. Its advice is to transcribe the file once per language and combine the results.

If the license or the App Store purchase fails

License errors look like the app breaking, and they are usually bookkeeping. A personal license has a soft limit of three of your own devices.

  • Your license is disabled. MacWhisper says this usually means the key was activated on too many devices. When you move to a new Mac, remove the license on the old one in Settings, Pro, Remove license. If it happens unexpectedly, email its support.
  • A resold key. Its help center says it has had to block licenses resold on third-party marketplaces. Its own site says purchases go through its Gumroad page or the App Store.
  • Pay Wall Error. In the App Store edition, this means the Mac could not reach the App Store, and the app may then show your purchase as inactive. MacWhisper calls it a macOS bug and recommends restarting the Mac.

Where YapToText fits

MacWhisper is a file tool that also dictates, and for recordings with subtitles or speakers it is the one to keep. If dictation is the part that keeps failing you, YapToText is built for that part and is free.

It types into any app from one key, straight from the Mac App Store, with its speech and cleanup models inside, and it transcribes files as plain text. It has no subtitles, timestamps or speaker labels, and it needs an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later. The MacWhisper vs Wispr Flow comparison covers the cloud route.

The short version

  • No dictation. The App Store edition does not have it. The macwhisper.com version does.
  • One app will not take dictation. Turn on Allow dictation everywhere, in Settings, Advanced.
  • No speakers. Choose a WhisperKit model with the Speaker Recognition badge. It is a Pro feature.
  • Slow. Turn off Disable all GPU usage on Apple silicon. Use a cloud provider on Intel.
  • Empty transcript. Toggle Downmix to Mono.
  • License disabled. Remove it from an old Mac, or email support.

Check the edition first, then the model, then the license. If something here no longer matches MacWhisper's help center, tell me on GitHub.

Questions

Why is MacWhisper dictation not working?

Most often because of the edition: MacWhisper's help center says dictation is only in the version sold on macwhisper.com, not in the App Store edition. If it works in some apps and not one, turn on Allow dictation everywhere in Settings, Advanced.

Why is MacWhisper speaker recognition not working?

It only works with local models on the WhisperKit engine, marked with a green Speaker Recognition badge, or with the ElevenLabs and Deepgram cloud providers. It does not apply to Dictation or Transcribe Podcast, and it is a Pro feature.

Why is MacWhisper so slow?

On an Apple silicon Mac, MacWhisper says a past crash can leave it in a compatibility mode: turn off Disable all GPU usage in Settings, Advanced, WhisperKit. On an Intel Mac, on-device transcription is much slower, and it suggests a cloud transcription provider.

Why does MacWhisper say transcription finished without any text?

MacWhisper says the audio is usually too short or was decoded badly. Go to Settings, Advanced, and switch Downmix to Mono on or off, then try again.

Why does MacWhisper say my license is disabled?

Usually the key has been activated on too many devices. A personal license has a soft limit of three. Remove the license from a Mac you no longer use in Settings, Pro, or email MacWhisper's support.

Why does MacWhisper repeat the same words?

Its help center says some older models can end a transcript with repeated words, and that switching to a WhisperKit model avoids it.
