VoiceInk on iPhone and iPad: how Quick Dictation works, and why your Mac license does not apply

VoiceInk has an app for iPhone and iPad, with its own keyboard and a feature called Quick Dictation that records from the Action Button or Back Tap without opening the keyboard. Quick Dictation needs iOS or iPadOS 18 or later. The iPhone app is licensed separately: VoiceInk's docs say a macOS license does not activate it.

I built YapToText, a different dictation app for the Mac, so read what I say about VoiceInk with that in mind. Every fact about VoiceInk here comes from its own documentation, read on October 9, 2026. YapToText has no iPhone app, so this page is here to answer the question.

Set up Quick Dictation

  1. Open VoiceInk on the iPhone, finish its setup, and allow the microphone.
  2. Select a working Mode and make sure its transcription model is ready.
  3. Keep Live Activities on for VoiceInk in the iPhone's Settings.
  4. In VoiceInk, open Settings, Shortcuts, tap Add Shortcut, and add the Quick Dictation shortcut.

Trigger it from the Action Button or Back Tap

  • Action Button. On a supported iPhone: Settings, Action Button, swipe to Shortcut, Choose a Shortcut, Quick Dictation.
  • Back Tap. Settings, Accessibility, Touch, Back Tap, choose Double Tap or Triple Tap, then pick Quick Dictation under Shortcuts.

Use the trigger once to start recording and again to stop. When the iPhone vibrates, tap the text field you want and tap Paste. Quick Dictation copies the transcript. It does not paste by itself.

The license is separate

A VoiceInk for macOS license activates the Mac app only. A multi-device Mac license covers several Macs, and an iPhone is not one of its device slots. If you bought the wrong one by mistake, VoiceInk's docs say to contact support with your purchase email. The VoiceInk license page covers activation and recovering a key.

On the Mac

If the Mac is where you write most, YapToText is my free dictation app there: one key, Whisper and cleanup on the Mac, no account. It has no iPhone or iPad version, and I am not promising one. For dictation that follows you to a phone, VoiceInk, Wispr Flow and superwhisper all have iPhone apps. The alternatives page for Windows, Linux and phones lists more, and the VoiceInk alternative page compares the Mac apps.

The short version

  • It exists. VoiceInk has an iPhone and iPad app.
  • Quick Dictation. Action Button or Back Tap, iOS 18 or later, copy then paste.
  • License. Separate from the Mac.
  • YapToText. Mac only.

If VoiceInk changes the iPhone app, open an issue on GitHub and I will update this page. Every one gets read.
