superwhisper on iPhone and Android: how it works, how to set it up, and what is missing

superwhisper runs on iPhone as a custom keyboard and on Android phones as a floating bubble. Its docs say iPad is not supported, and Android tablets are not supported. A Pro license covers both phone apps at no extra cost.

I make YapToText, a different dictation app for the Mac, so read what I say about superwhisper with that in mind. Every fact about superwhisper here is from its own docs, read on October 10, 2026. The pages are Superwhisper on iOS and Superwhisper on Android. YapToText is a Mac app only, so on a phone I have nothing to sell you.

Where it runs

From superwhisper's docs, read October 10, 2026.

DeviceSupportedHow it works
iPhoneYesA custom keyboard you switch to in any app
iPadNoThe docs say iPhone only
Android phoneYesA floating bubble over any app
Android tabletNoThe docs say phones only
Apple WatchNot mentionedThe docs describe no watch app
Mac and WindowsYesThe Windows page covers the PC side

Set it up on iPhone

  1. Install superwhisper from the App Store and open it once.
  2. Go to iOS Settings, General, Keyboard, Keyboards, Add New Keyboard, and select Superwhisper.
  3. Tap the Superwhisper keyboard in that list and turn on Allow Full Access. The docs say the keyboard needs it to transcribe audio and insert text.
  4. In any app, touch and hold the globe key and choose Superwhisper.
  5. Tap the record button, speak, and stop. The text is inserted at the cursor.

On iOS 26.4 and later, a keyboard button that opens the main app no longer returns you to the app you were in. Swipe back instead. The docs call this an Apple platform change that affects all third-party keyboards.

Set it up on Android

  1. Install superwhisper from Google Play and open it.
  2. Grant three permissions: Floating bubble, Text insertion and Microphone. Notifications are optional.
  3. On the home screen, tap Enable floating bubble.
  4. In any app, tap into a text field, then tap the bubble.
  5. Speak, then tap the bubble again. The text is inserted at the cursor.

You can also dictate inside the app with the record button. Swipe up on its home screen to see recordings, replay audio, share the text or delete one.

What does not carry over from your Mac

Modes and vocabulary are stored per device and do not sync to the phone yet. The docs say cloud sync is planned, and to recreate the modes you use most in the phone app's settings. The iPhone app has its own settings for modes, models, vocabulary and stats, under the gear icon.

What it costs on a phone

The Pro license you bought for a computer covers iPhone and Android too. You activate it with a QR code or by hand. On Android, Settings shows your plan and how many trial words are left. The superwhisper pricing page has the plans, and the license page covers activation.

If it stops working

  • iPhone keyboard missing. After an iOS update it can vanish from the list. Add it again with the steps above.
  • iPhone dictation fails. Confirm Allow Full Access is on. Cloud models need a connection. Recordings also appear in History in the main app, where you can retry.
  • Android bubble missing. Open Settings, Permissions, grant Floating bubble, then enable the bubble again.
  • Android text not inserted. Grant Text insertion. The dictation is not lost. It is saved in History.

On a Mac instead

YapToText runs only on Apple silicon Macs with macOS 14 or later, with no iPhone, iPad or Android app. On the Mac it is free, with no account, and both the speech model and the cleanup model run on the computer. The superwhisper alternative page compares the two Mac apps.
