MacWhisper privacy and safety: what stays local, and where to download it

MacWhisper transcribes on your Mac by default, including speaker recognition, so your audio does not leave the computer. Data goes out only when you choose a cloud feature: a cloud transcription provider, DeepL translation, or an AI prompt sent to an online AI service. Its own site also warns that fake MacWhisper websites exist, and that the real one is macwhisper.com.

I make YapToText, which overlaps with MacWhisper on dictation and files. The MacWhisper facts here are from macwhisper.com, its privacy policy and its help center, read on October 9, 2026.

What stays on your Mac, and what does not

From MacWhisper's help center article on keeping transcriptions private, read October 9, 2026.

Speaker recognitionOn your Mac, with WhisperKit models
Cloud transcription (Groq, ElevenLabs, Deepgram and others)The audio goes to that provider
DeepL translationThe transcript goes to DeepL

Nothing leaves unless you set up a cloud provider and pick it. Its privacy policy, last updated February 14, 2024, says the app can send anonymous analytics about license status.

Download it from the right place

  • The official site. macwhisper.com. Its footer warns that scam websites pretend to be MacWhisper and may carry malware.
  • Where purchases happen. Through its Gumroad page or the App Store, per the same notice.
  • Install from the link you get. The site says to install only from the link you receive after confirming your download on Gumroad.
  • The App Store edition. It is called Whisper Transcription, and it has no dictation into other apps.

Its help center also warns against licenses resold on other platforms, which it may disable.

Meetings and other people's voices

MacWhisper Pro can record meetings, which needs Screen Recording and Microphone permission. The help center calls automatic meeting recording a beta that may occasionally lose data, and suggests manual recording for critical meetings. Recording other people is subject to your local consent laws, whichever app you use.

YapToText next to it

The two apps agree on the main point: transcription on the Mac. Where YapToText differs is that it has no cloud provider to configure, so there is no setting that can send audio out.

  • Cleanup included. Its cleanup model runs on the Mac, free, where MacWhisper's AI prompts need Pro and a provider you connect.
  • No analytics. No account, no license check and no tracking. Updates come from the App Store.
  • Fewer features. No speaker labels, meeting recording, batch jobs or subtitle export. MacWhisper does those, and YapToText does not.
