Cancel an Otter.ai subscription: the steps, what happens next, and the no-refund rule
By Ryleigh Newman · Published
You cancel an Otter subscription on the web, in Account Settings, Billing, Cancel plan. The plan then runs to the end of the billing period you already paid for and does not renew. Otter's help center says subscriptions are non-refundable, so the date that matters is the next renewal: cancel at least 24 hours before it.
I built YapToText, a dictation app for the Mac that is not a meeting recorder, so I have little stake in this one. Every fact about Otter here comes from its own help center, read on October 10, 2026.
This app is completely free. You don't have to make an account. There are no subscriptions, no difficult downloads, and nothing is locked. Made for Apple silicon Macs. Source on GitHub.

Cancel on the web
- Sign in to Otter as the owner or an admin of the workspace.
- Go to Account Settings, then Billing, then Cancel plan.
- Select your main reason and click Continue.
- Read the pop-up and click Cancel subscription.
Only the owner or an admin can cancel. Everyone in the workspace keeps the paid features until the billing cycle ends.
If you subscribed through Apple or Google
A subscription bought in the Apple App Store or Google Play is not canceled on Otter's site. Otter says to manage billing, refunds and cancellation directly with that store, under the store's own refund policy.
What the help center says about money
From Otter's help article Cancel an Otter subscription, read October 10, 2026.
| Question | Otter's answer |
|---|---|
| Is canceling immediate | No. The subscription expires at the end of the billing cycle |
| Can I get a refund | No. Subscriptions are non-refundable under its Terms of Service |
| A refund for the unused part, if I forgot | No |
| Can I pay for one period with no renewal | Subscriptions renew automatically. Cancel any time before the cycle ends |
| When to cancel | At least 24 hours before the next billing date |
Pause it, if you only need a break
Account Settings, Plan, Pause Plan. Otter says you can pause a subscription only once.
After it expires
- The workspace. Stays active, on the free Basic plan, with that plan's limits.
- Your conversations. Team members keep access to the 25 most recent conversations.
- Changing your mind. You can reactivate before it expires, or buy again afterward, on the billing page.
- Your account. Still exists. Canceling is not deleting. The page on deleting an Otter account covers that.
If Otter's Notetaker still joins your meetings afterward, this page shows how to turn that off.
Transcription with nothing to cancel
YapToText is free, with no subscription and no account. On a Mac it transcribes an audio or video file to plain text, with the model running on the computer, and it dictates into any app with one key. It does not join meetings, label speakers or write summaries, so it replaces only the transcribing part of Otter. The Otter alternative page compares more options, and the Otter pricing page lists its plans.

The short version
- Where. Account Settings, Billing, Cancel plan.
- Who. The owner or an admin.
- When it ends. At the end of the billing period.
- Refunds. None from Otter. Store purchases go through Apple or Google.
- Pause. Once, from Account Settings, Plan.
If Otter changes these steps, open an issue on GitHub and I will update this page. Every one gets read.
