MacWhisper vs Whisper Transcription: the direct download and the App Store edition compared
By Ryleigh Newman · Published
MacWhisper and Whisper Transcription are the same app from the same developer, sold two ways. MacWhisper is the direct download, paid once. Whisper Transcription is the edition on the Mac App Store and the iOS App Store, with subscriptions. The core transcription is shared. The big difference: only the direct download can dictate into any text field on your Mac, and only it accepts a license key.
I built YapToText, a different Mac app for dictation and file transcription, so read what I say about MacWhisper with that in mind. Every fact about MacWhisper here comes from its own help center, read on October 9 and 10, 2026.
This app is completely free. You don't have to make an account. There are no subscriptions, no difficult downloads, and nothing is locked. Made for Apple silicon Macs. Source on GitHub.

Why dictation is missing from the App Store edition
MacWhisper's dictation article says dictation is only in the version sold on macwhisper.com, not the App Store one, because of restrictions Apple puts on apps sold on the Mac App Store. So if you want to talk into Mail, Slack or a browser with MacWhisper, buy the direct download.
Which one to buy
- You want dictation, meeting detection or the command-line tool. The direct download.
- You want to pay once. The direct download.
- You want it on an iPhone or iPad. Whisper Transcription. On iOS all local models are free to use.
- You only transcribe files now and then. Either. The free direct download transcribes files with local models.
A key bought on macwhisper.com does not unlock the App Store edition, and an App Store subscription gives you no key for the direct download. Decide which edition you need before you pay, because the purchase does not carry over.
The Assistant subscription
Whisper Transcription has an optional Assistant subscription for cloud transcription, AI translation of transcripts, and chat about a transcript. The help center says it is optional and that you can add your own API key instead. On iOS there is no Pro unlock at all: local models are free, and the subscription only covers those assistance features.
An App Store app that does dictate
That limit is not universal. YapToText, mine, is on the Mac App Store, free, and it dictates into any app: you grant it the Accessibility permission once, tap Right Command, talk, and the text lands at your cursor. It also transcribes audio and video files. It has no speaker labels, subtitles or iPhone app, so for those MacWhisper is the pick. The MacWhisper alternative page has the full comparison.

The short version
- Same core. One developer, two editions.
- Direct download. Paid once, dictation, meetings, command-line tool, license key.
- App Store. Subscription, no dictation into other apps, iPhone and iPad.
- Purchases. Do not carry between the two.
If the editions change, open an issue on GitHub and I will update this page. Every one gets read.
